YEAR 10-12 NEWS

Term 1

Senior School Semester Exams

Week 9 (final week of Term) will host the exam period for our Senior School students. Students in Year 10 will have normal scheduled classes, with examinations occurring in their core subjects during class time. It is expected that Year 10 students are in all classes during the final week of school.

Year 11 & 12 students will not have classes during this final week. Students are reminded they must attend the College for their scheduled examination in full school uniform, it is important that all students carefully check the examination timetable in the coming days. Any students with exam clashes must organise an alternative time to sit this exam – this can be done by seeing the Year 11 or 12 LCL:

Year 10 Science

Our Year 10 Biology class extracted DNA from strawberries and also extended this to bananas. A fun practical for all involved.

Year 10 students were also comparing the DNA of six athletes and detecting the gene for 'super flexibility' by using gel electrophoresis.

The 'super flexible' allele was identified using restriction enzymes and we compared the different sized fragments of DNA by loading them into the gel and ran the electrophoresis. We compared the DNA of the six athletes looking for the smaller sized DNA fragments - homozygous recessive.

Students used micropipettes and used equipment that scientists would use in genetic identification of elite athletes.

Year 11

The year 11 students have been busily completing their final SACS and preparing for their upcoming exams. Students completing a Unit 3&4 subject completed the GAT yesterday, gaining their first experience of VCE exam conditions. Next week during the exam period, Year 11 students are only required to attend school when they have an exam to sit. Please take note of when your exams are and ensure you are on time and prepared!

In sports news, the senior girls football team were victorious at the next round of football on Wednesday, winning the grand final! Congratulations to the whole team on their efforts and sportsmanship on the day. Special mention to Caitlin Charles, Amber Towart, Meg Alsop and Piper Copeland for their on field performances, and to Danielle Rhodes for her excellent leadership and skills. The senior boys team head out next Tuesday so we wish them all good luck!

Year 11 Art Excursion

The Year 11, Art Making & Exhibiting students went on a fun adventure into Melbourne for Unit 2. We visited The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) and went to the Melbourne Now exhibition and Top Arts 2022. We saw so many artforms and found inspiration in a lot of Victorian artists and their work. Big thank you to Anne for volunteering and joining us and Kianah for being our public transport guru.

A very big congratulations to Missy Richmond for exhibiting her beautiful gouache artworks at the 37th Annual Art Exhibition at Anglesea Art House! Well done, you’re so talented!

Year 12

Congratulations to the Year 12 students who completed the GAT yesterday. The behaviour and work ethic of the students during the assessment were very positive and bodes well for the upcoming exams.

Ensure you rest well during the weekend as next week Unit 3 exams will be held. Students are not required at school unless completing an exam.

To the Year 12 students who are attending the Formal tonight wishing you a wonderful night. A big thank you to Amanda Dickson and the VCAL team who helped organise and fundraise for the event.

Best of luck to the students sitting their exams next week.

Year 12 English

Year 12 students completed their English Oral assessments last week, where they had to prepare and perform a persuasive speech on a topic of choice. Our assessing panel of staff and alumni, including Will Gaskin, Nathanael Briese, Mel Veljan and Mikayla Versace, were treated to speeches on a range of topics, such as racism, organ donation, vaping and the Voice referendum.

VCE - Vocational Major

Learning through lunch

Senior VCAL, VCE-VM and Academy students participated in the Ardoch’s Learning through Lunch program. Students had a tour of the Gordon City Campus learning about the different courses and facilities they offer. They were then treated to a fine dining 2 course meal in the Davison restaurant. Students were separated into groups with a volunteer from the community joining each table. Students thoroughly enjoyed this experience.

Inclusion Day

Two weeks ago, the VCAL students assisted the school Wellbeing team to run a Wellbeing and Inclusion Day. Students cut up oranges and carrots as well as made fairy bread that was available for free to all students.  The VCAL students made pizzas from scratch selling out of all pizzas by the end of lunch. The VCE-VM students ran a staff vs. student football game at lunchtime that was very entertaining.
