Junior School

Year 1

Our Year 1 students have enjoyed a variety of learning opportunities throughout Term 2.

This term, the students have been following the progress of the new shade sails in the Junior School playground. Great discussions were had as they observed this process over a period of time.

Spelling has also been done in a variety of ways. This week the students were very enthusiastic for their spelling as they rolled out the playdoh to make their words! We were also reminded of God’s great love and how each of us has the opportunity to share His love with others by showing them respect and kindness.

Year 2

Last week, the Year 2's revised their procedure writing skills by writing procedures on various topics such as how to blow a bubble and how to make hot chocolates and slime. They then put these procedures into action by each making a hot chocolate and some slime. Later in the week, we met up with our Year 4 buddies again to learn some more valuable ICT skills!

Year 3

In Science, the Year 3's have been learning about solids, liquids and the way materials change state when heat is added or taken away. In this class, we pretended we were molecules and acted out what molecules do in different states. In a solid, the molecules are held together by strong bonds, so we stood close together and linked arms. In a liquid, molecules are no longer linked but can move about the space freely. We wrapped the lesson up by learning more from a Bill Nye the Science Guy video. It was a fun activity and we have a better understanding of the effect of heat on materials.

Year 4

Year 4 is finishing off the semester strongly. A big thank you to Mrs Robinson for organising and attending (on her day off) our biodiversity audit of King's College last Monday (read more below). The students and I had an amazing time exploring and analyzing everything!

Our class has proven themselves to be a creative bunch coming up with some impressive looking "what's on your mind?" pieces of artwork. These are linked into the scripture 2 Corinthians 10:5:

We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ

Teaching students to take captive any negative thoughts that would prevent them from learning, interacting positively with others and robbing them of joy.

We have also been neck deep into our creative writing with students creating Limericks and poems about our emotions and feelings:

Year 4

There once was a class in Year 4

They loved to eat Chicken raw

One day they started a revolution

That created so much pollution

That every other class started to snore.

(Then everyone crashed into the door)

This newsletter article will see off Johann I to Indonesia next semester. We will miss your wonderful smile and enthusiasm as well as your amazing creative ability. We pray for a safe journey and an ease into your new school environment.

Junior School Art

If you're visiting our School sometime soon, why not drop by and take a look at our Art works on display along the corridor? Our students have been busy learning about other artists. Part of their learning meant that they were to design an artwork using the first letter of their name and inspired by modern artist, Romero Britto. As usual they rose to the challenge!

The artwork coincides with the last day of term next Friday where students are able to come dressed as a character using the first letter of their name. As an extra challenge some of our very clever students asked me to hang their artwork trying to make words of their letters. Of course I was unable to use all the letters. However, if you look hard there is one seven letter word which I am very proud of. I wonder if you can spot it?

Junior School LOTE

The Prep students have been learning about Family members such as Mum, Dad, brothers and sisters. They can recognise the Chinese characters and they have shown improvement in their character formation.

Sustainability News

Last week the Year 4's conducted a biodiversity audit of the School grounds. We spent the morning recording habitat features such as indigenous/native trees, weeds and organic litter, as well as native animals and insects. We were joined by Elia Pirtle from Environment Education Victoria and Geoff Rollinson from Landcare Victoria, and were able to look at the bugs we collected with a digital microscope. It was a really engaging and informative way to spend World Environment Day.
