Our Miss Foster

On Monday morning, as our staff gathered in the staffroom to reflect on the day ahead, I was so aware of the challenge they faced as they were about to meet their students for the first time this term.  I realised the best guidance I could give them was to consider "What would Sarah want?  What would Sarah do?"

Sarah Foster would have been so impressed, moved and grateful. The support and care shown to our students on Monday mirrored her own approach to guiding our children through life. Sarah would have been equally proud of her 2F, as well as all the students she taught here, and the Beaumaris Primary community.

I thank everyone who has shared stories of Sarah since the news of her passing. Her belief in every child and her nurturing of their success has been a recurrent theme. Each story revealed how her deep understanding of her students allowed them to feel a special part of her class. A sense of belonging that provides confidence and self-esteem. So many of you have described the difference she made in your children's lives.

It has been important to hear these stories as Sarah was not someone who drew attention to herself or her successes. She allowed her students to shine. This was evident in the final weeks of the term when the class were like gypsies as their room in our Pavilion was flooded. Eventually they found a short-term home in the library. Sarah made this an adventure and used the challenge to build stronger bonds in her class.  Rather than present herself as the hero of the situation, which she was, she expressed empathy for the challenges I faced in attempting to address the situation.

When I commenced at Beaumaris Primary 6 months ago, one of my first tasks was to build a leadership team. Sarah came to have a chat with me. She sensed exciting directions and wanted to be a part of it. While a leadership role may have been a new experience, Sarah was clearly a leader by nature. Through that first chat her commitment, integrity, values and purity of intention became clear. I cannot tell you how important that is to the culture of a school and a staff....and to me.

I am already missing Sarah and all she has brought to Beaumaris Primary

We are all grateful for the privilege of being her colleagues and for her dedication and care for her students.
