Grade 1 Students

Celebrating our outstanding Ones!

Literacy

The grade 1s have been working on unpacking procedural texts. We looked at the structure to include an aim, materials, steps and conclusion. After that, we had a go at writing our own procedural text of ‘How to make fairy bread’. Students independently wrote the instructions and then teachers performed the steps with the materials. For example, ‘Put the butter on the bread’ – so teachers put the whole tub of butter on top of the loaf of bread! As hysterical as this was, it helped us to understand that we needed to be more explicit with our steps and add lots of detail to help the reader. Students are attempting round 2 of this procedural text – stay tuned for updates!

Maths

We have had an introduction to ‘multiplication’ – however, this has been in the form of making equal groups and skip counting to find the total. For example, we roll the dice and that tells us how many groups we need. Then we roll the dice again, and that tells us how many to put in each group. After that we skip count (by 2s, 5s or 10s) to find the total. We have even been writing the equation as repeated addition – such a clever bunch we are!
