Year 10 Students

Over the last month, Careers lessons with Year 10 students have been delivered via Zoom. Many thanks to the Life Skills staff for facilitating these classes and for their enthusiastic support of the Aitken Careers program and its delivery in a very different way this year.

Almost all students have now completed their Morrisby profile and we hope this has generated some interesting and useful discussions.

Year 10 students have now received their 2021 VCE / VCAL Handbooks and are aware of the programs offered for the next two years, VCE (the Victorian Certificate of Education) or VCAL (the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning), and of the subjects which have been tentatively offered by the College for 2021 for students undertaking the VCE program. To enhance their understanding of the VCE and VCAL an Information Night for parents and students for each program will be held early in Term 3. In addition, on the first Friday of Term 3 (17 July) via Zoom, a Year 10 Panel will take place, where Aitken Alumni will talk to the students about their pathways and any twists and turns experienced since finishing at the College and what they know now that they wish they had known when they were in Year 10.

We are looking forward to meeting the students in person in Term 3 during their 30 minute one-on-one consultations with Careers staff.

Year 11 and 12 Students

We are enjoying our interactions with the Year 11 and Year 12 students and are currently working with a small number of Year 11 students to assist them with a change of subject for Semester 2. Year 12 students continue to undertake their career and course research as they contemplate their direction at the end of 2020. The Term 2 holidays are a great opportunity to give some thought about what 2021 and beyond might look like.

Many of the Universities and TAFEs are delivering webinars (advertised in the Careers newsletters) to provide information to students (and their parents) about courses and about their institution. You can attend these from the comfort of your home with no travel time or inclement weather with which to contend. We expect to hear soon about the format of Open Days (traditionally held on Sundays in August during Term 3) and the innovative delivery methods which might be employed by the tertiary institutions for 2020.

Decisions are still being made regarding a date for Year 12 Results (release of ATAR), Change of Preference periods and dates for Offer rounds, so unfortunately at this time we do not have information to disseminate. We will advise students of this important information as soon as we are able.
