News from our Classrooms

Foundation News

The Foundation LW students have settled into the school routines. It has taken a little while to re-connect as a group, but I feel we are finally getting there!

Today is Day 73 as we count towards 100 Days of School. The students are really enjoying the STEM session each Friday with Mr Frazzetto. They are becoming great collaborators as they work together in small groups to complete a challenge Mr Frazzetto has set them. This week, we continue with the Lego train set and our challenge is to use an Ipad to make noises for the animals we created on Friday.

In Inquiry this week the students are going to be introduced to a Venn diagram. They will use it to work with a partner and compare their family with another family. They will need to record what is the same and what is different.

Have a lovely week!

Year 1/2 News

This week, the Year 1/2 students have continued to dive headfirst into exploring our Inquiry unit, investigating what comes from the farm to our plates!

The 1/2 students have continued exploring the daily lives of a farmer, how they protect the environment and their animals. There is noticeable excitement as we discuss what products come from cows. The students enjoy peeking through their lunchboxes to see what dairy products they can find, and sharing their findings with their class!

In Literacy, the students are reflecting on home and school learning. They are writing how to be a self-manager and recording the things they were proud of during their remote learning.

During Mathematics, the students have begun to learn about time. Last week, they learnt about calendars and each class was able to get hands-on and create a whole class calendar. The students enjoyed then going on to make their own months of the calendar, making sure to choose their birthday month!

It was a fabulous week of learning. A big well done to the Grade 1/2's!

Year 3/4 News

The Year 3/4 students are back into the swing of learning! Last week (and for 3/4KD this week) was the start of our STEM Learning with Mr Frazzetto and our students couldn’t be more excited!

Mr Frazetto asked students the big question “What is Stem?”. The students collaborated in small groups to unpack their thinking around STEM Learning. After lots of discussion, the students discovered that STEM is not just a subject at St. Fidelis. They discovered that STEM is more than just building Lego creations – STEM is a way of thinking and doing and learning important skills. STEM  is Coding, Animation, Construction, Creativity, Problem Solving, Team Work, Data, Physics, Trial and Error, Thinking, Experimenting, Communicating, Research and Challenges.

The students collaborated in groups of three to explore the new We Do 2.0 Lego sets. They investigated the different blocks and working parts, such as wires, the brain (thinking hub), wheels, bricks and cogs.  Stay tuned to see our future Lego creations!

In English, the Year 3/4 students have been revisiting the comprehension strategy of making connections, exploring the difference between making surface and deep connections. The students will begin learning the comprehension strategy of compare and contrast this week. In Writing the students are composing a personal letter about their COVID-19 impressions and experience, as part of the ‘Dear Australia’ Australia Post Campaign.

This week in Numeracy, the 3/4 students are having fun exploring the properties of 2D shapes and will move into learning about 3D shapes.

We are so happy to finally be back together again!. The students are really enjoying being back at school and learning together at St. Fidelis, including in their specialist subjects!

Year 5/6 News

The 5/6 teachers were very excited to welcome all the Year 5/6  students back to school. We have been extremely impressed with the hard-work and determination of the students throughout their Remote Learning. The students returned to school with positive attitudes and an eagerness to learn.

Our learning this week focused on investigating what we have learnt throughout our time in Remote Learning. The students discussed their experiences and time spent at home. They also engaged in collaborative work to investigate ways we can incorporate our remote learning schedules into our classroom routines.

The Year 5/6 students have been learning about the event of Federation this week in our Inquiry unit about Australian history. They are working in groups to create a news report based on their findings of this event.

In Literacy, they have been continuing to work using a checklist to edit their Information reports to enhance their writing.

In Mathematics, the students continued their learning around creating a timetable as well as working on revising their understanding of addition and subtraction.

In Religion, we have continued our inquiry into the life of the early church, with a particular focus on the life and work of Caroline Chisholm.

The Year 5/6 students are to be congratulated for all their hard work these past weeks. We look forward to continuing to work with them for the rest of the term.
