WANGANUI ON SHOW

Our end of year Awards night, ‘Wanganui On Show’, will take place on Wednesday 20th December at Eastbank. It is a wonderful opportunity for our College to recognise many of our talented students and also showcase drama, music and dance performances. All are welcome to attend the evening; the ceremony starts at 7.30pm and we ask that people be seated by 7.15. If you would like further information please contact the school office.

We will be notifying our award winners by regular mail. We do try to give award recipients and their families as much notice as possible. It would be wise to keep this night free. Everyone is welcome to be part of the audience to enjoy a great night highlighting what wonderful things our students have achieved.

Sponsorship

The Awards ceremony would not be possible without support from a number of local businesses, individuals and organisations who sponsor our Community Awards. We value the ongoing commitment they show to our College and to our students.

2017 New Zealand Sports Tour

On November 24th a group of 24 students and 2 staff left Australia to travel to New Zealand for a 10 day sports tour. This is the eighth time this tour has run and it was once again a fantastic trip. 2 netball teams and 1 tennis made up of students from year 7 though to year 10 enjoyed travelling to different schools on the North Island as well as being billeted on some occasions. Our itinerary started in Auckland with the first day settling in before playing netball at Mt Roskill College on day 2. Our next stop was a small town further north called Warkworth. We played netball and tennis against Marhurangi College. This is the first school where we experienced the traditional Maori Powhirri. This is a great opportunity to understand the traditions of the Maori people but as we line up for the hungi our students are very self-conscious!  After the games, students went home with their billets.  Some found themselves at the touch rugby competition that evening while others were exploring the black sand beaches nearby. After saying farewell to our billets we made our way south to Cambridge for games against Cambridge High school. After some excellent games of netball and a lesson on the tennis court we spent the night in Cambridge before heading to Rotorua for a weekend of cultural experience and amazing geographical sights. The Tamiki village experience, Thermal Valley and Luge rides were highlights of the weekend. On Monday morning we travelled down to Whanganui High school. We arrived at 4 pm and the students were teamed up with their billets and headed to their homes. We met back at the school in the morning and then some competitive netball and tennis games were played before sharing an afternoon tea and the students leaving with their billets for the evening. Departure in the morning was slightly delayed with long farewells and promises to stay in touch. The final leg of our trip involved a stop in Kapiti College. The traditional welcome was a feature here as the Maori cultural group of students sang and spoke before we joined in a game of dancing and singing. Some competitive games of tennis and netball were played before we were back in the bus and heading for the beautiful city of Wellington. The team settled into our final Hotel before going out for dinner and a trip up the Cable car to look over the city and harbor views. The next morning had a few up and about early to get some quick shopping in before we travelled out to Upper Hutt for our final games. Once again we were made very welcome and the games were tough and very close. After the games a delicious afternoon tea was served and our students showed how good they had become at mingling and chatting with students from other schools. Our final night in Wellington involved some clever packing as students realized they had done more shopping than planned!

We had time for a final look around Wellington, and the chance to fill any gaps in the suitcase on Friday before heading to the airport and departure. 10 days of sport, travel, cultural experiences and fun had come to an end. What a great trip this was. A wonderful opportunity for our student to explore a beautiful part of the world, get to know themselves and other WPSC students a little better and form some new friendships.
