Book Week and Book Fair
Term 3 is always exciting in the Discovery Centre as this is when we celebrate Book Week. This annual event highlights the importance of reading and draws on the joy of stories and the creativity of Australian authors. There is evidence showing us that students who are highly engaged in reading are more likely to be effective learners and will achieve greater outcomes at school.
We will be unpacking the theme for 2019 - “Reading is my secret power” and then reading the shortlisted books, having follow up activities and the students will have the chance to vote for their favourite title too.
The “official Book Week” is from Monday 19th - Friday 23rd August, with Friday 23rd being the culmination of Book Week, with our annual Book parade (9-10am), incursions, competitions, rotational activities etc. etc.
We will also be hosting a “Scholastic Book Fair” from Wednesday 14th- Tuesday 20th August. The students really look forward to this event, which is also a good fundraiser
for the school. Full details to follow closer to the time.
Book of the Week
“Pig the tourist” / by Aaron Blabley is rich with Blabley’s signature rhyming text and unforgettable illustrations. When Pig, the world’s greatest Pug, goes on holiday he causes chaos wherever he travels. This book will show children how not to behave when it comes to cultural and environmental appreciation. Sure to be as popular as his “Pig the Pug” books.
Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge
At the end of Term 2 we had a refresher on how to add items to a students PRC record and most classes were given time in DC to complete this task. Remember the challenge closes on 6th September, so don’t forget to keep adding your books.
Happy reading.

To make the first week back an exciting start, the Year 3 students have learned something really special! They have learned about Chinese Terracotta Warriors! The students have learned about the history related to Terracotta Warriors as well as different types of Terracotta Warriors. They were very interested to see photos of the warriors as well as other related archaeological artifacts, such as the bronze coins used in the Qin dynasty in China. Students were very excited to make their own warriors out of playdough!
P.S. There is a Terracotta Warriors exhibition in NGV until 13 October 2019. Parents might want to have a visit with their children.
