Cultural Diversity & Harmony Week

What a fantastic time! Incredible food with enticing flavours and aromas, rhythmic international music including dancing and a Eurovision quiz, various competitions including global cities and buildings, Magic Maths, greetings in a language other than English, and an opportunity to learn about prominent international Science figures. So much in just one week. Students were so excited to participate in several activities and to taste food from various cultures. Families supported us generously as dishes arrived endlessly during the Thursday Food Stall and students coordinated by the EAL Club ran a great event. Thank you to all!

Year 9 Fitness and First Aid

This term the Fitness and First Aid elective classes have been on some exciting excursions. They were able to attend Runnez running gym to participate in an interval/fartlek running session as they are mid-way through their self-designed fitness training programs. Students worked really well in the session and pushed themselves to maximise their fitness gains.

They were also lucky to attend that Victorian Institute of Sport in Albert Park, having a tour of the facilities, participating in some fitness testing and other activities and also meeting one of Australia’s best middle distance runners – Melissa Duncan. Students were also able to observe the VIS Biomechanist refining the changeover techniques for the women’s relay team and as well as world famous swimmer Mack Horton. The students really enjoyed the excursion and also being exposed to the wide variety of activities that places like the VIS provide in relation to sporting careers.

Year 11 Outdoor & Environmental Studies Camp

The Outdoor Enviro class have just attended their first camp experience, camping with the koalas in Cape Otway. They were able to see firsthand the human impact on the environment over the last 200 years and also participate in some exciting outdoor activities. Students had a surf lesson in Torquay, a mountain bike ride in the picturesque town of Forrest and hiked some of the Great Ocean Walk.

English

In English there is holiday homework at a number of levels which involves reading the next text (novel) the girls will be studying. In Year 9 the students are encouraged to read 'The Golden Age' and Year 10s are encouraged to read 'To Kill a Mockingbird'. Their teachers will not be offering spoiler alerts as we do not have the time to read this in class. If students have read these novels prior to the lesson, they will derive much greater benefit from their interactions with the text in class.

There is a Study/Homework club every Thursday after school for one hour and the number of attendees is growing. It will resume in term 2.

World Challenge

With the holidays upon us (and the training camp approaching in late June), it would be a great time to search for items for the kit that are discounted.

On Tuesday 19 June a qualified Travel Doctor will visit MGSC and speak about vaccinations, altitude sickness and other things. More details in term 2.

The itinerary for almost all of the teams is posted on the World Challenge website and each team should check it to ensure they are satisfied with the length of stay for each phase of the expedition.

Hint #9: This has already been stated and  will be repeated a lot: drink heaps of water whilst trekking to avoid dehydration and altitude sickness. Going to the toilet in the wilderness is much better than suffering dehydration headaches and altitude sickness!

Have a wonderful holiday.
