Prep Inquiry/Science

Last week we went outside to do a Science Experiment on the effects an oil spill can have the environment and especially its inhabitants. We put on our Art Smocks and got into teams. We mixed cocoa powder with water to make a mixture then we poured some oil into the mixture. We used plastic spoons, cotton wool balls and paper towel to see if we could remove some of the oil from the water. We had to determine the best method to remove the oil. It was really tricky! We decided the paper towel was the easiest way to soak up the oil.

We also washed feathers, as we would if penguins were stuck in a spill, with detergent and determined that would be time consuming and distressing for the animals.  It was really messy but LOTS of fun!! The Prep Children

Year 4 Media Magic Incursion

Last week the Year 4 students participated in a Media Magic incursion as part of their ‘How We Express Ourselves’ Unit of Inquiry. The students thoroughly enjoyed exploring animation where they created a short cartoon, a television and news program and a radio show!

Media magic was my favourite incursion so far. I enjoyed it because everyone had a great time and even when people made a mistake no one was upset. I think everyone enjoyed it as much as me.

I loved doing my part for the TV show - I had to interview Kate; she was pretending to be a local shopper at Kwik-E-Mart and I was interviewing her about the incident that had occurred. Everyone else had a part too. First was the person who introduced the news then there were two people who in did a news report. Then it was our turn to do our interview. After that, there was an advertisement for Lunar lollies they had to sell the lolly.

Then there was a sports report - Zoe did the sports report for the girls and Oliver did the sport for the boys. After they finished, Luc did the weather report; he made it very funny. Then Daisy and Sienna did amazing facts. After they finished there was a Vegemite song advertisement and silly dancers and a Vox pop. Mila rapped it all up, concluding the 4A TV show. It was so fun to make!

Sachi H (4A)

The Media Magic Incursion was amazing! There were three parts to this incursion, but I am writing about the stop animation activity. If you want to learn about TV and radio, have a look at Sachi and Willow’s writing pieces.

Everyone’s stop animation was fantastic! Mine and Jessica’s was about a girl jumping off a cliff and a shark comes and bites her leg, and then they both disappear into a little cut in the paper, while blood was circulating through the water. Some other people also cut a hole in their paper, so different things at different times had to come in and out so it made the session a little long with all of the photos that needed to be taken.

I think next time if there was anything to work on, I would say it would be more practice, because I was a little nervous and Jess had to do all the moving for me because my hands were a little shakey.

The scene/background was at the beach with a beautiful sunset and the cliff that she jumped off earlier.

On the Friday before the incursion, we had one session to make our characters and our backgrounds. Some people got their hands in but it doesn’t matter, it was still ok.

Overall, the day went really well and we learned a lot about how they create different forms of media.

Kate I (4A)

On the 18th and 19th of  November  the Year 4 students had the Media Magic incursion where we made a TV show, a stop animation and a radio show. I will be writing about radio, but if you want to learn about TV and stop animation go check out Kate and Sachi’s writing.

For radio, we all had a script and a part. There were news segments and advertisements. We all had to be super quiet and patient while we waited for our part. There was acting and a mystery sound where people had the chance to win prize money. My favourite parts were the acting “Haunted House”. It took around 5 practices but the end result was hilarious! I also enjoyed the News Bulletin with Pippie, Alex, Dylan and Zoe.

Overall, the Media Magic Incursion was a lot of fun and our class really enjoyed all of the activities.

Year 5 PLAY Leadership Program

Thanks to a grant from Bendigo Bank, last Friday (23 November), 30 Year 5 students were fortunate enough to participate in a full-day Resilient Youth Positivity, Leadership and Activated Youth (PLAY) Leadership Program. Students learnt how to facilitate safe and fun games for other students during lunch times and recess which they will be implementing in 2019.

Student feedback about the day was extremely positive and our PLAY Leaders are now looking forward to using their newly acquired skills and knowledge to teach games to the junior students.

The PLAY program at BNPS was made possible through the 2018 Beaumaris Community Bank® Grants Program. The Beaumaris Community Bank® is a full service branch of the Bendigo Bank, but owned by local Shareholders and run by a local Board of Directors. The company's constitution specifies that up to 80% of profits are to be returned to the Beaumaris and Black Rock community in the form of grants, donations and sponsorships. This year, the Beaumaris Community Bank® is proud to support this wellbeing initiative for the students at BNPS. Where you do your banking can make a difference to your community and your family.

Year 5 Sandringham College Dance Showcase

Last Wednesday (21 November) the Year 5 students were lucky enough to attend the Sandringham College 2018 Dance Showcase 'Around the World'. As you can see from their comments below, they thoroughly enjoyed it!

It was really good, you could tell they had practised a lot...my favourite was the water/rain technique dance at the start.

They did really well. My favourite was the Beyoncé songs.

I enjoyed the dancing very much.

Congratulations to the staff and students of Sandringham College on such a professional showcase - our teachers were thrilled to see some ex-BNPS students performing!
