Careers

My name is Aviva Mulloy and I will be taking over the Careers Department at South Oakleigh College in 2020.  I want to take this opportunity to highlight a few of the exciting career initiatives that will be running for SOC students this semester.

In Term 2, I look forward to working with the Year 7 and 8s as we start to explore their skills, interests and values and how these can be applied to their career portfolios.

In Term 2, the Year 9s will be participating in the Morrisby Assessment and Interview Program.  This online discovery tool enables students to develop a personalised report through Morrisby’s testing platform and provides them with a private career counselling session to look at their assessment results and learn about how these can be used to set career goals to start putting career actions into place.  The feedback we received from last year’s participating cohort was very positive and this is a great opportunity for students to develop a better understanding of how to take a more active role in their career journeys.

I am looking forward to leading a career session with the Year 10s on February 20 as part of their study skills program.  I will introduce them to the work experience program, highlight some areas of VTAC that are important to become familiar with and together we will look at how global economic, social, technological and environmental changes are affecting the world of work and how this might apply to their career pathways.

Throughout Term 1, I also look forward to getting to know the Year 11 and 12s and supporting them as they start to consider their pathways post secondary-school.  In the coming weeks a career space will be set up in the school’s library where students will be able to access relevant information in regards to job placements, University/TAFE open days, study/exam prep workshops, etc.  There will be fixed times throughout the week where students are welcome to come and have a chat with me in this space, otherwise I encourage students to set up an appointment with me at the front office to discuss any career-related questions or concerns.  Finally, I want to bring attention to the school’s career website that can be accessed via the Compass Star and also the weekly career newsletter that is posted on the Compass newsfeed.  Both of these links are useful tools to help keep students, staff and parents informed and aware of the various career opportunities and advice available.

I am really looking forward to 2020 and continuing to develop the careers program here at South Oakleigh College.  If you have any questions or feedback please don’t hesitate to contact me.
