2019 Electives

All Dunhelen students should have chosen their electives for 2019. I hope that parents and students were able to discuss the elective options and that students chose electives that they have a genuine interest in. The electives are not pre-requisites for further study, but rather a ‘sampler’ of different areas. It is hoped that the electives offer opportunities for students to explore their interests.

Year 8 City Experience

This week, the Year 8 students enjoyed the Dunhelen City Experience. Students completed work in class to ensure that it all ran smoothly for them. Students enjoyed a visit to the Eureka Skydeck, Big Issue Classroom, Birrarung Marr, Queen Victoria Market, The Shrine of Remembrance and some even got as far as the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Students were also given the chance to marvel at the graffiti in Hosier Lane and do some shopping - lots of eating too. A big thank you to all the teachers who assisted in this experience whether at school or in town. Thank you to Mrs Vlahopoulos for her organisation of the whole event. Well done Year 8!

Uniform

A reminder that students should be in proper school uniform every day. If washing a uniform, students must ensure that it is dry for the school day or they should have extra uniform items. Wet uniform is not a valid reason for a student to be out of uniform. It is important that students are taught to respect the rules, this will serve them well in later life. Please do not write your child a letter for not being in uniform unless there is a genuine reason. Your support in this matter is appreciated.

Mobile Phones

At Assembly, last week, students were told that mobile phones being used between the hours of 8.45am and 3.15pm will be confiscated for the day. If students really need to bring their phone to school it should be locked in their locker for the day. The school will not accept responsibility for lost, damaged or stolen phones. Please do not call or text your child through the day as this places them in the uncomfortable position of wanting to return your message but knowing that they should not be using their phone during school hours. Important messages can be relayed to students via the Dunhelen Administration. Please encourage your child, when at school, to not ring parents immediately when they feel something is wrong or are feeling ill. They should be speaking to a teacher, who will then make contact with parents if necessary. This will save many parents, students and teachers undue stress.

'Work and Play' Schedule

We are just over halfway through the term. Some students will start to feel overwhelmed as assessment items that are due slowly mount up. Please do ensure your child is continuing to try their hardest. It is important, however, to have a ‘work and play’ schedule, so students should also be enjoying leisure time playing sport, reading, cooking or doing something other than school work. If your child is becoming overwhelmed make sure that you give them the time and quiet space they need to do work. You may also want to remind them that Dunhelen has the Homework Club on Tuesdays and Thursdays at lunchtime and they are welcome to attend.
