Mindfulness

Mindfulness Information

In challenging times or circumstances, whatever they may be, we can sometimes find snippets of inspiration or motivation in random places. It may be encouraging words from a friend, philosophical social media posts and memes, religious scripture, a particular song or lyric, or even just enjoying the company of friends and loved ones. Unfortunately, the latter has been significantly affected by recent events that have implications spreading right across our planet. But we adapt to the best of our ability.

One thing that that I have gleaned through conversations (conducted in an appropriate, socially isolated environments of course) is that everybody’s experience is varied. Whilst many may be similar, some are in stark contrast to others. The reality is that not only may we be experiencing different challenges but the way we perceive, are affected by and address those challenges can be very different. I myself cannot speak from the perspective of someone who has lost their business, means of livelihood or a loved one.

I do believe that we have some influence and control about how we manage whilst navigating our way through this period. Just as there are many places to access snippets of inspiration, there are plenty of resources that can be accessed for support. Some have recently been disseminated to the St Joseph’s College Community and are too numerous to list here.

One thing that I encourage is to practice mindfulness. Whilst there are many resources and practical applications, mindfulness as a therapeutic technique is to focus awareness on the present moment. It is to calmly acknowledge feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations. Mindfulness does not involve dwelling on the past or worrying about things that may or may not happen in the future; it is about recognising what you have immediate control over. To succeed at this is to realise that you then have some choice as to where you focus your energy; to ask yourself: Is it helpful? Is it productive or is it even necessary?

Remember to remain mindful to ensure you don’t miss those little pieces of inspiration.
