The 2023 MGSC Push-Up Challenge

June 1 - 23

The MGSC community will be challenged to complete 3,144 push-ups over 23 days in June as we put a spotlight on the number of lives lost to suicide in 2021. We know - that's a lot of push-ups. But don't sweat it, any exercise goes, from star jumps to cartwheels to sit ups to squats. Plus, participants can aim for half of the push-up target instead.

Aims of the Challenge

IMPROVE PHYSICAL HEALTH

Students, staff and the whole MGSC community will take their fitness to the next-level by committing to daily exercise that are challenging and fun. Daily targets average a cool 157 push-ups – but if that seems like a lot, you can take the 50% option and save half the sweat. If push-ups aren’t their thing? Swap it for an alternative (See attached document for ideas). Either way, every participants' fitness will reap the rewards. Less than a quarter of kids aged 5–14 undertake the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity every day. Let's turn this around together.

MENTAL HEALTH EDUCATION

When you download the app, each day’s push-up target corresponds to a Mental Health Fact. Over the 23 days, MGSC will get clued up around mental health, as we learn how to optimise our own mental wellbeing. Science-backed hacks will be shared for supporting others in need, plus what to do if participants are ever struggling themselves.

FEEL MORE CONNECTED

Students and the MGSC school community will enjoy a sense of team spirit while working together towards one epic shared goal. The challenge is also a great way to open up conversations among schoolmates and between students and teachers, sparking chats about mental health and helping to reduce the stigma. Research shows connection can be a significant preventative factor for depression, and is important in reducing depressive symptoms.

RAISE MONEY TO SUPPORT THOSE IN NEED

We have set a goal to raise $2000 for Lifeline, please get on board and help us reach our target
