Kitchen Garden

In the Kitchen

Weeks 3 & 4

PIZZA, PIZZA, PIZZA!

Over the last couple of weeks in kitchen classes, students have been very busy making ‘Pizzas of the Imagination’ using produce from the garden such as potatoes, Jerusalem artichokes and marrow, as well as some fresh herbs such as basil and rosemary. We also used some olives that were preserved from our kitchen garden last year!

We were VERY excited to make use of our woodfire pizza oven again, which is located in our Italian Garden! The students were very keen to assist Esther and Ed in cooking the pizzas. A BIG thank you to both Esther and Ed for all their help over the last couple of weeks to ensure our pizzas were cooked to perfection!

To accompany our delicious pizzas, students also made a ‘Seasonal Garden Salad’, using some lettuce and beetroot leaves from our kitchen garden. We also put a sweet spin on our ‘Seasonal Garden Salad’ by sprinkling some pomegranate over the top!

1/2C was a very lucky class to have the Chef from "Unica Cucina" Restaurant come along to their Kitchen session and help us make pizza and crostoli biscuits.  Thanks so much for bringing your Mum and the Chef along Mia! We love it when they visit!

WORLD BEE DAY

On Saturday 20th May it is World Bee Day. The purpose of this day is to spread awareness of the significance of bees and other pollinators for our survival.

In kitchen classes this week and next week, students will celebrate World Bee Day by engaging in activities such as honey tasting and using honey as our hero ingredient in our cooking. We have been busy this week making homemade teriyaki sauce for our teriyaki noodle stir fry, which also included some bok choy straight from our kitchen garden!

The Year 5/6 students also made Chong You Bing (spring onion pancakes). They went down a treat, with many students asking for more!

We finished with a sweet honey treat - homemade honeycomb! The students enjoyed watching the baking soda being added to the mixture of honey, sugar and water, as it made the mixture go bubbly and puffy!

Its been two weeks of harvesting and foraging from our garden area  - picking our last pumpkins and artichokes.  Our 3 /4 students collected sticks to fire up our pizza oven, with the extra unsued sticks we placed them into our Kitchen Garden to create habitat for bugs and small birds.

In the garden our preps were looking at all thing "BEES" .  We went on bee hunts in the garden , using magnify glasses we spotted lots of buzzing bees in our salvia flowers. We even made time to plant bee friendly plants.

What makes our Kitchen Garden super special is the generosity of our students and families and this fortnight we've been lucky enough to be gifted with feed and toys for our school Guinea Pigs from Charlie who saved up pocket money to purchase and donate items.  Wonderful gesture.

We've also been lucky to have the De Pietro Family help us with introducing goats to our kitchen garden.  We look forward to introducing our two special additions.
