Casey Tech School 2023
On Tuesday of Week 4, Year 10 members of Houses Garuda and Griffin embarked on our 3-day excursion to Casey Tech School. On the first day, we were first introduced to the problems we would rigorously attempt to solve over the course of our visit and given the background information necessary to tackle them. The first of our series of challenges was generating 100 ideas to combat this issue, which tested our creative prowess. We then arduously went through each of these ideas, sorting the wheat from the chaff, and then proceeded to synthesize the ideas we deemed valuable into a viable solution for our target group, and began designing our prototype.
To fabricate this prototype successfully, we were introduced to the remarkable array of cutting-edge technologies, which we were privileged to access during our excursion. However, learning to navigate this technological landscape was a challenge in itself, despite the workshops provided by the Casey Tech Staff. After all, Virtual Reality designing technology, 3D printers, Hummingbird, Makerspace and the plethora of other avenues open to us were uncharted territories. We learned to work with the skilled Casey Tech Staff to fabricate our prototypes and strive for constant improvement by following the design cycle. One such example of this is the LorAltert wristband and app, a device which aims to alert those who are hard of hearing to sensory information they would not otherwise be able to access. We employed the makerspace, hummingbird, Computer Aided Design and 3D printing facilities to develop our prototype and utilized virtual reality technology to model the use of our device in the real world. We were also taught how to pitch our products effectively and rehearsed numerous times to ensure a compelling presentation.
Finally, on Thursday, the culmination of our collective efforts was unveiled at the highly anticipated 'Expo.' It was a moment of pride as we showcased our prototypes. Ultimately, “The knowledgeable staff, professional atmosphere and unique technology we wouldn't have access to at school made Casey Tech an eye-opening and engaging experience.”- Best Inyang.

Precinct Traffic Safety Committee Update
Sir Gustav Nossal Boulevard has a speed limit of 20 kmh. There are 3 Shared Zones which are indicated with signage and a raised paved area. Shared Zones have a speed limit of 10 kmh. Please be aware that pedestrians have right of way on a Shared Zone and there is a roundabout at the Clyde Road entry. There 2 pedestrian crossings - outside Federation University and at the end of Sir Gustav Nossal Boulevard, outside Nossal High School.
It is important that drivers of all vehicles moving in and around the precinct observe all road signage and road rules. The speed limits have been put in place to ensure the safety of all pedestrians, including our students. Currently there is concern about some vehicles being driven too fast which has the potential to cause accidents.
All drivers are urged to be patient and observe the road rules in the precinct. It is a policy requirement of the Department of Education and a major safety concern for Campus Traffic Safety Committee who have advised that should the problem persist, police will be asked to attend during peak times.
Once arrived at Nossal please ensure you follow all posted signage including no standing zones. (Please see the map below). Where there is no speed limit indicated, cars must be driven at walking pace only.
Pedestrians also have a role to play in traffic safety. An additional safety problem is the increasing number of students who are walking and crossing roadways while listening to devices through headphones. Drivers report students crossing in front of them without looking and clearly not hearing a car is nearby. Students are reminded to look both ways before crossing any road and only cross when safe to do so. Do not rely on traffic lights alone. There have been reports of near misses when vehicles have run a red light.
Federation University's security have previously reported that there are several Nossal students who walk through Buchanan Park and then through the university car park to go to school. Student must not walk through the Federation University carpark. The footpath that runs parallel to Sir Gustav Nossal Boulevard must be used for pedestrian access to Nossal High School.
