Visual Arts

This week in Visual Arts, Foundation students continued to experiment with mixing the 3 primary colours; red, yellow and blue to then make secondary colours, orange, green and purple. They were also introduced to ROYGBIV, which are the first letters of each colour that is in the rainbow: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet. Students were to paint, mix colours, cut and paste creating a rainbow cloud. Year 1/2 students continued to mix primary colours to make secondary colours. Students completed ‘A colourful vase of flower’ painting, demonstrating their understanding of mixing colours. Year 3/4 students also continued to work on understanding colour by creating new hue’s (colours) by adding extra colours to the main colour. They also learnt the value of a colour can change just by adding white paint to make it lighter or black paint to make it darker. Year 5/6 students also revised the colour wheel, where they used the primary colours to make secondary and then tertiary colours. They too created new hue’s (colours) by adding extra colours to the main colour.

Culture Studies

Last week in culture studies, Foundation to year 2 students completed their Italian Carnevale Venetian masks and then they created cards for Mother’s / special person’s Day. I showed them watercolour, dot art and pop-up card techniques and students were able to choose what they would like to create. The year 3 to 6 students continued to work on their Carnevale Venetian masks by painting and adding craft materials such as sequins, beads, feathers, glitter etc

PE and Health

In swimming last week, we did a follow up session to our school swimming program. Each class explored and discussed the safety issues around water in the home. We often are quite safe around water when we go to the pools or the beach, but are not so aware of the issues around water at home. We had a discussion after the dangers of water and the need to be responsible with the use of water in the home and especially in the bathroom.

This week we continued our respectful relationships program and started Topic 3 which is about Coping Strategies. We started discussing self talk, both positive and negative and how this can influence your emotions and how you respond to different situations.

It was highlighted that we need to develop and practise coping strategies to move from low emotions or negative thoughts to more positive ideas. Hopefully your child can start implementing these ideas.

In PE, we have had a couple of sessions of Tabloid sports. This is a mini activity program and rotations that the students work together and synergise to achieve their best results. The activities include catching, throwing, kicking passing, sliding and target drills.

The students love these activities and their sportsmanship and teamwork has been amazing.

Interschool Sports

Last week was our first week of interschool sports and it was very exciting, because for the first time in over 15 years, we were playing in multiple sports. We played netball, softball and soccer and we played against Cheltenham PS.

Due to our numbers we have included grade 4 students in our teams. As a result it was very challenging, but the students efforts were fantastic and their sportsmanship was amazing.

  • The Soccer boys lost 6-1.
  • The mixed netball lost 30-1
  • The girls netball lost 28-2
  • The mixed softball lost 13-10
  • The girls softball tied 4 runs each.

We will play our second game this week and are looking to improve each week.

Kingston District Cross Country

Next Tuesday 23rd May approximately 35 students from grade 3-6 will represent our school at the Kingston District Cross Country. The students were selected from our house cross country event at the end of term 1. We wish them well.
