The 2020 Olympic Games at John XXIII College
“Success isn’t always about ‘greatness’. It is about consistency. Consistent hard work gains success. Greatness will come” (Dwayne Johnson)
On Monday 7 September we ran the 2020 Olympic Games with our students of French, Italian and Japanese. We held the Winter Games in the morning and the Summer Games in the afternoon. We were so fortunate with the weather.
Team Française, Team Italia and Team Nihon competed in the three mighty events: “Tamago” (egg and spoon race) “Saltando” (skipping) and “Le Tunnel” (Tunnel ball). There was lots of cheering, great excitement and some innovative styles.
The winning country for the 2020 Winter Games was Team Japan. “Yoku dekimashita”
The winning country for the 2020 Summer Games was Team Française. “Bien faire”
A special thanks to Ms Jessica Donovan and Mr Daniel Curtis for all your help in running the 2020 Olympic Games.
Merci, grazie and arigatou to Mme Leckey, Mme Lucas, Prof Duncan, Prof Galati, and Aghdasi Sensei for organising the teams and running the events. Our students are very lucky to have such wonderful teachers.

Year 8 Guest Speaker - Amy Coombe
During the Year Assembly on Thursday 3 September Amy Coombe presented to Year 8 students on the topic of mental health in adolescents and personal wellbeing. Amy shared her own experience during her teenage years, battling an eating disorder and depression where she managed to hide her illness and suffer in silence. Having overcome this, Amy uses her experience to change the lives of others and passionately works towards breaking the stigma associated with mental illness. Amy spoke with heart, humour and honesty, and she left students with an important message regarding their own personal wellbeing; “if in doubt, get checked out”.

#NoChildLeftBehind
The COVID-19 pandemic has not only had a profound impact in our Australian society and around the world, but also on those seeking asylum in Australia. Currently, there are 16,000 children and young people seeking asylum in Australia. Their families remain ineligible for any substantive government support and as such there is a huge need in our community, as people are forced into destitution. Childhood is not only a gift but a human right; as part of the #NoChildLeftBehind week of solidarity, our John XXIII College community stands in solidarity with the children of the world seeking asylum.
This week we are working together to create awareness for those our age who are trapped in unfortunate circumstances by engaging in activities universally enjoyed by children. Through this we hope to promote a just society in which all people can reach their full potential.

Western Australian Schools’ Constitutional Convention 2020
Last Wednesday a select group of talented Year 11 Politics & Law students took part in the annual School’s Constitutional Convention. The Convention was held at the Constitutional Centre in West Perth. This year’s Convention addressed the topic of Federalism, the Constitution and fielding questions – such as the need for a preamble to the Australian Constitution. Students heard from a panel of experts including Professors from the University of Western Australia and Curtin University on matters of Constitutional law and government.
Students who attended are invited to apply to the National Schools Constitutional Convention to be held early next year.

ACC A Division Athletics Carnival
Next week on Wednesday 16 September, our team of 160 students will compete in the 2020 ACC A Division Athletics Carnival. It has been a pleasure to witness how determined and committed our squad members have been at our morning training sessions. Our team goal is to finish in a position that enables us to stay in A Division again for 2021. I would like to congratulate all students selected to represent the College this year and truly believe that if all perform to the best of their ability we have a strong chance in achieving this goal.

We have only one training session left on Monday 14 September and it would be great to see all selected team members there at 7:00am for this final session. Whilst all selected team members are encouraged to attend, training is open to all students. A reminder that students need to attend the ACC carnival and a minimum of five training sessions to receive an ACC Athletics badge.
