Vic Roads – Road Smart presentation
On Thursday 13 September, the Year 10s were joined by a Vic Roads representative via Zoom. During the Zoom we learnt about the 4 aspects of road safety; safe cars, safe roads, safe people, safety rules. We were led through a slideshow that showed us many situations that can take place on the road.
We were confronted by some upsetting realities of road life but also showed how we can take steps to ensure these scenarios don’t happen. The presentation was engaging and very informative. After the presentation, we all felt a lot more knowledgeable about road rules and a lot more confident in taking to the streets. Obviously, we cannot drive right now however we await our chance to attain our L’s eagerly.
Some quotes from the students who participated in the activity:
“The presentation really explained all the different road rules. It gave us an insight into the pros and cons whilst driving”.
“The presentation explained the rules of driving well. It went really well and was an effective session”.
“Today’s presentation was interesting. I was able to learn more about the road and how to reduce accidents from happening. I found it very helpful and enjoyable”.
“The presentation really helped to identify what kind of driving situation you might be in as a learner and how to keep yourself safe”.

Student Wellbeing
Strategies to cope with stress, anxiety or distress
When many things feel uncertain or out of our control, one of the most effective ways we can manage stress and anxiety is to focus on the actions that are in our control. Here are some ways you can take intentional steps to look after your physical and emotional wellbeing during this challenging time:
Acknowledge your feelings.
Whatever you are feeling right now, know that it’s okay to feel that way. Allow yourself time to notice and express what you’re feeling. This could be through journaling, talking with others, or channelling your emotions into something creative.
Maintain your day-to-day activities and a routine as much as possible.
Having a healthy routine can have a positive impact on your thoughts and feelings. Go back to basics: eating healthy meals, physical exercise (e.g., walking, stretching, running, cycling), getting enough sleep and doing things you enjoy.
Remember that physical distancing does not need to mean social disconnection, stay connected and keep things in perspective.
If you need help, remember to contact your teachers, Year Level Coordinator or school counsellor for support.
Subject Selection and Transition
I would like to acknowledge the hard work each of the Homeroom Teachers has put into preparing your son’s for their subject selections. The process began early in Term 2. Students started with the Pathways Project, had an individual interview with their Homeroom Teacher to discuss their options and finished with the combined interviews with St Bede’s staff. Your sons have been guided every step of the way and should have made informed decisions for next year and beyond.
There will be a limited transition period at the end of the year. The details are still being finalised. Unfortunately, the Year 11 and 12 VCE exams have been pushed back as a result of the pandemic. This has impacted on the time available to run the usual two-week program. When the details are confirmed, you will be notified via Operoo (formerly CareMonkey).
I hope everyone can enjoy some much-needed rest over the break. It has been a long and challenging experience. We will do our best to support and encourage the young men to get to the finish line. We hope that is not too far away!
Stay safe and well.
