Year 7
As we move into the final week of Term 3, I would like to continue to thank you for all the efforts you have put in to support your son’s learning during this difficult time. Our Year 7 Staff have been really encouraged by the dialogue that has taken place throughout the remote Parent/Student/Teacher Interviews period.
I would like to take this opportunity to take the following into consideration moving into the holiday period:
Limit Screen Time/Sedentary Behaviour
With large amounts of time spend on devices, it is important to allow your son to disconnect from technology for prolonged periods of time. Break up long periods of sitting as often as possible. Limit sedentary recreational screen time to no more than 2 hours per day. When using screen-based electronic media, positive social interactions and experiences are encouraged.
Maintain/Increase Physical Activity
As we all know a great indicator of great mental health is physical activity. National Physical Activity Guidelines stipulate accumulating 60 minute or more of moderate to vigorous physical activity per day mainly involving aerobic activities. To achieve greater health benefits, replace sedentary time with additional moderate to vigorous activity, while preserving sufficient sleep.
Sleep
It is expected for a young adolescent to have an uninterrupted 9 to 11 hours sleep per night. In saying this it is also important to have consistent bed and wake-up times. This will promote a good routine which will assist in going back to remote learning in early Term Four.
Start a New Hobby
To preoccupy your son, it may be beneficial to get them into a new hobby, I know personally during this prolonged lockdown I have rekindled my enjoyment for building Lego models. Something as simple as drawing, reading a book, setting exercise targets etc. can engage the areas of the brain that may not have been stimulated in this current environment.
As always, our staff are here to assist in any way possible, we will be working hard over the next few weeks (including holidays) to continue to provide the best possible support for your son academically and pastorally.
