National Write a Book in a Day

On the surface, you would think that running an extra-curricular activity during lockdown would be a breeze. The students are all at home. You don't have to organise snacks or pizza. Nobody's complaining about the library being closed.

But you also don't have to worry about the Internet going down, or a couple of students mysteriously disappearing for a couple of hours, or the Bots that get added into chat that play weird music all day.

But the 2020 "lockdown" Book in a Day was still an up-roaring success. We were given these prompts: a basketballer, a queen, a non-human wizard, a quarry, passing exams. With that, the boys came up with a time travel extravaganza including a wizard trapped in the shape of a basketball and an evil queen that hated magic.

It was an exhausting day, but the result was an engaging story written in twelve hours and illustrated by a cadre of talented artists.

Special kudos to Tom and Ben, Will and Freddy, who were still with me at half-past eight at night, making sure everything was perfect for uploading.

There is still time to donate, if you would like to support the Kids' Cancer Project. From the website:

"The Write a Book in a Day competition has contributed over $1 million towards childhood cancer research since 2009 through The Kids' Cancer Project who also distribute the books to children undergoing treatment in hospitals all over Australia."
