COVID-19 Quilt

St. Joseph’s College Echuca has taken the challenge presented by the COVID-19 pandemic and wrapped it up in a quilt.

In an initiative created by the College Textiles Department, students, families, staff and friends of St. Joseph’s College were invited to complete a single patchwork block to reflect their experiences through the pandemic to date.

The result was a beautiful contribution of squares sewn into a single quilt by Textiles Department staff at the College.

Each square is very different and gives voice to the individual experiences of all who contributed.

In doing so, the quilt represents the range of experiences by the College community at this time.

The Textiles students completed their square by hand – no sewing machines were involved.

The students involved ranged from Year 8 to Year 11. Some of these students hope to make a career in the fashion industry, whilst others have chosen the subject to develop life skills.

Above all, their participation was with enthusiasm and pride and all of those involved have opted to make the most out of the situation they are faced with.

The quilt will be displayed in the College foyer and then mounted as a wall hanging in the College at a later date to represent this significant era in the College and the community.

The College also plans to create a written publication of the COVID-19 era for their Young Adult Book Week to be held 17th to 23rd October 2020.  Students, families and staff will be invited to contribute to the publication to document their thoughts and feelings through this difficult time.
