WELC Report

Message from the

WELC Coordinator

- Mrs. Carmela Santucci

Students in the Language Centre have been busy with a variety of activities. The learning is always around the language of English, but the teachers make sure the experience of learning is as varied as possible. Activities include science experiments, media and communication and excursions just to name a few. With the end of the school year fast approaching, most students exiting the Language Centre this term, have attended “Headstart” programs at their respective schools. This experience is a great way for students to begin preparing for their transition to mainstream school. The feedback has been very positive with many students feeling excited about their future learning.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish our community of students, families and homestays a happy holiday, and for those students returning next year, we look forward to seeing you in 2020.

Cooking Elective

The Elective Program in WELC includes hospitality. This program exposes students to foods readily available in our markets and supermarkets. During class, students were required to observe the teacher and then follow the written instructions to reproduce the recipes. The students shared prepared food with their peers in the Language Centre and their families.

At times, the cooking lesson was challenging, as students were unfamiliar with the ingredients or the methods used to produce the required outcome. This generated discussion. Students and teachers talked about the taste of foods and the combination of ingredients. It was often a taste sensation for the students. There were many discussions about whether their families (and cultures) would like these foods. All the students were acknowledged for their participation and learning.

Art Elective

This term, students in art demonstrated their artistic skills in various ways including print making, scratch art, tessellations and clay drawings. Recently students created art work around the theme ‘Under the sea’. They painted backgrounds using watercolours and then drew silhouettes of sea creatures.

Above is some of the students’ recent artwork.

Philip Island Excursion

On Friday 29 November, every student in WELC attended an excursion to Philip Island.  The weather was perfect and students had a fun and relaxing day exploring different parts of the island.  We went to a wildlife park. where students were able to feed native Australian animals including wallabies and kangaroos, while trying to avoid the greedy emus.

Next, we had a relaxing picnic lunch in Cowes, where students could enjoy time with friends and enjoy the gorgeous views of the beach below.

Finally, we went to the Nobbies, where everyone wandered along the boardwalks, enjoying the fresh air and taking a lot of photos.

It was a lovely day with many students not wanting to leave at the end of the day.

Group 1 students have described the excursion below. Each sentence uses alliteration, a technique students have been learning about in class.

We went to the famous Philip Island for our excursion, it took four hours and it was far away.

WELC all went to the well-known Wildlife Park and watched weird wombats, wild wallabies and other wildlife walk wistfully around the windy woodland on a warm week-day.

Pupils and professors had a perfect lunch at the park with parrots. The lovely ladies walked for a long time to a lively park for a luxurious lunch.  Us patient pupils played peacefully and had a pleasant picnic beside the beautiful beach in a public park.

Nikki walked along the narrow Nobbies next to the nameless mountain towards the north.

During the few hour on the bus, Farras and her four friends slept frequently. Time ticked truly on the trip back to school as thirsty travellers talked thoroughly or took a nap.
