Speaking 4 the Planet

Speaking 4 the Planet

Speaking 4 the Planet is a public speaking and drama competition for high school students. Each year, the UN’s World Environment Day theme provides the focus for the talks and performances. Speaking 4 the Planet has three categories: prepared speech, impromptu speech and impromptu drama. Students are asked to make their presentations a bit quirky! This encourages them and inspires the audience to think outside the box.

Chloe Nicholson attended on behalf of McCarthy, this is Chloe’s report of her day.

"Last Tuesday I was lucky enough to go to Speaking 4 the Planet in Armidale. At the event students from around the Diocese spoke or acted about this year's topic ‘The Air We Breathe’. There were Impromptu speaking, prepared speeches, drama acts, impromptu writing and artworks.

I entered in the impromptu speech and prepared speech categories. For the impromptu we were given inspiration and encouraged to make it matter!  Both of my speeches went well but I didn’t place in either; winning didn’t really matter because I had a really great day and made some new friends. The organiser said that my impromptu speech was his favourite and is now being displayed on the Speaking 4 the Planet  website.

It was a day filled with fun, jokes, amazing performances and a lot of learning, but you didn’t even realise you were learning.  I can’t wait to go back next year. "
