NSW 2019 Training Awards New England Region - School Based Trainee of the Year Finalist

On Friday 28 June, Josh Turner attended the Northern Skills Development Group NSW 2019 Training Awards for his nomination as Greater New England Region School Based Trainee of the Year Finalist.

We would like to congratulate Josh on receiving the Highly Commended Award for his exceptional efforts.

Josh's traineeship came about as a result of Josh’s ambition to pursue a university degree and career in primary education as well as the development of CSO Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander “Grow Our Own” initiative that focuses on encouraging Indigenous students in the Armidale Diocese to pursue a career in teaching. The “Grow Our Own ” initiative also supports of our Armidale Diocesan Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Policy 2016 by increasing the number of Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander teachers in our schools for which Josh is the perfect candidate.

Josh commenced work at St Nicholas Primary school in early 2018 and has been working diligently alongside teachers one day per week since then, supporting students from Kinder through to Year 6 to ensure he receives a full taste of what it looks and feels like to be a primary school teacher.

Josh also attends an online TAFE session once a fortnight and from there is responsible for ensuring that all work is completed and assessments are submitted on time. This independent style of learning has seen Josh develop the exceptional organisational and time management skills required to keep up to date with any lessons missed whilst tending to TAFE or work demands.

Josh must be congratulated on the way he is currently conducting himself, at work, TAFE and school. He is obtaining outstanding results at TAFE and doing both McCarthy Catholic College and St Nicholas School Tamworth proud.

Congratulations Josh, not only for your nomination, but also for setting the high standard necessary to showcase the strengths and talents of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in the diocese and ensuring the “Grow Our Own” initiative continues to create Indigenous teachers and leaders of the future.
