Student Achievements

Outstanding In2science Mentee Student Award goes to Sapir Triffon

Glen Eira College has been involved in the In2science program for many years. The program aims to increase student engagement in science and maths by placing volunteer university students into classrooms as peer mentors. During their time helping in the classroom they talk with students about their own journey into the fields of science and/or mathematics, their university studies and where they see their degree taking them beyond university. Our students gain through positive interactions with peer role models and an increased connection between the curriculum and the world outside the school classroom. Each year the In2science program, which currently reaches out to over 2500 students in 52 high schools across Victoria, offers an award to a student “who demonstrated exceptional engagement with their In2science mentor and studies.” This year the award went to Sapir Triffon in 9B. Congratulations, Sapir!

2018 Maths Talent Quest Winner

On Thursday 18 October, the Maths Association of Victoria held their 2018 Maths Talent Quest Awards ceremony where Penny McNeill of 8B was awarded a Distinction.

Penny’s investigative project was called ‘Should we be sewing our own clothes?’ in which she found that whilst it may be quicker and cheaper to buy your clothes, that shouldn’t stop you sewing your own clothes if you want to experience the resultant satisfaction from doing so. It was a detailed and well-presented project.

All projects were ranked on Originality, Mathematical Content, Communication and Presentation with Penny’s project being ranked High in all of these criteria.

Along with her certificate of High Distinction, Penny received a movie voucher and a $50 prize voucher.

Congratulations, Penny.

Footnote:

Whilst there were many projects at the primary level, there was a much lesser number at Years 7- 9 and even less at the Years 10 -12 level.

A prize in the MTQ is something for all GEC students to aim for in 2019!
