Prep

Over the first few weeks of the 2023 school year, the Prep team and Oatlands community have enjoyed getting to know our new Prep students. Our time together has been spent learning one another's names, socialising, making new friends, as well as learning the rules, routines and expectations for the classroom and the playground.

We know you are all wanting to know what goes on in the classroom so here’s a small insight into what we cover…

Our Numeracy lessons are filled with counting songs, whole class and partner games, as well as fun and engaging open-ended investigations of number and concepts. The students are able to choose their own strategy and materials to help them solve problems individually or within a group. We finish each lesson with reflection time to share our new discoveries.

Literacy consists of Writing, Handwriting, Smart Spelling and Literacy Group rotations.

Our SMART Spelling word of the week builds the basis for most of our literacy activities. We revise the Word of the Week through songs and flash cards, complete a craft activity, complete handwriting practise based on the word of the week and focus some of our story writing tasks around the Word of the Week too.

Literacy Groups rotations are an enjoyable way for the students to complete tasks relating to their book, alphabet activities, blue word games and fine motor skill activities. These group rotations are popular with our enthusiastic Prep students. We will begin these in the next few weeks.

Integrated Studies explores a different concept each term. This term our focus is ‘Community and showing respect by listening and caring for each other.’ We will investigate:

·      people in our families,

·      how families are different,

·      acts of friendship for a healthy community,

·      being safe and seeking help.

In Week 3, the Prep students visited the Cyber Safety Project incursion that taught the students how to be safe online and share with an adult when something doesn’t feel right. They had so much fun!

We will be asking students to bring in some items that tell us something about them as well as asking them to talk to you at home about their family and culture.

Thanks for such a positive start to the year!

The Prep Team.
