VICTORIAN YOUNG LEADERS TO INDIA

This year our college was fortunate to be accepted into the Victorian Young Leaders to India Program.

The Virtual VYL India Program will:

  • foster connections and develop relationships with communities and schools of India and with the Indian diaspora in Victoria.
  • develop students’ engagement and future opportunities in STEM by completing an inquiry-led project and design challenge which addresses a real-world issue related to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
  • build intercultural capability by completing the Global Competence Certificate (GCC), an online 10 module program with live online reflective sessions, and through guided interactions to build understanding culture, life and school in Australia and India.
  • develop students' global citizenship and leadership capabilities.

On Tuesday 21st February four of our Year 9 STEM Students participating in this program attended an in person workshop with students from other Victorian schools. They interacted with peers and took part in team building activities as they explored intercultural understanding and what it means to be a global citizen.

At the very end of the day they had an opportunity to briefly meet with their school buddies from India with whom they’ll be working on a Design Challenge related to the Sustainable Development Goals.

Student Reflection:

On Tuesday the 21st of Feb, we had the great privilege to travel to Sustainability Victoria as part of the VYL program (Victoria Young Leaders to India Program) for an in-person workshop alongside students from other schools across Victoria.

Participating in the workshop was an awesome and unique experience for all of us. Throughout it, we engaged in team building activities, expanded our knowledge and skills on leadership and communication, interacted with our Victorian peers, put our critical thinking skills to the test, explored what the UN sustainable development goals are and what it means to be a global citizen.

We also had the great privilege to meet mentors and special guests that will participate in the program alongside us and received awesome advice from them as well as having our questions answered about the program.

At the end of the day, we had the opportunity to meet with our Indian peers from the school we got paired with and discussed our cultural experiences and how we will work through our STEM challenge related to the UN sustainable development goals over the next 6 weeks.

Overall, we all really enjoyed participating in this workshop and are excited for what the rest of the VYL program holds for us.
