Thornbury History Group

Did you know our school has an active history group? The group meets regularly collating and documenting all kinds of memorabilia about our school. Do you have anything that could be included in the school archives?

The group also published a history of the school for the centenary in 2015.

You can purchase ‘School Days - Memories of Thornbury Primary 1915-2015’ at the office for just $20

It contains many anecdotes of school life over the past 100 years, including using the school as a hospital during the 1918 Spanish Flu epidemic, receiving the strap or cane for punishment, Jac Nasser ( former head of Ford Motor Co) being hit by a car in Hutton st then crawling out from under the car and running into school as he was running late, the introduction of Indigenous Studies and winning the girls State basketball championships in 2001 to name just a few!

The Enviro team have had a busy year and recently started a renovation of the Native Food Garden (the front garden at school) with the help of a Landcare grant and term one working bee This included intensive hand weeding, composting, mulching and new irrigation.  In term 2 in class children will assist with planting this area out with native plants.  We have received 4 new worm farms through a Landcare Grant and a generous donation from the City of Darebin and will have signage on them soon with instructions for use designed by TPS children.

Many thanks to the 22 families that attended the term one Working bee.  We moved approximately 7 cubic metres of compost and mulch. Much needed maintenance was done to the wooden playground, prep and farm areas as well as a lot of work in the music room with instrument maintenance followed by a bbq lunch and socialising.

Soon we will start to focus on maintenance of our fruit trees and renovating our Nursery area to allow for our children to experience propagation firsthand and allow us to grow more plants more efficiently. . We need assistance from people with carpentry skills to renovate our very old hothouse so please reach out to the enviro team if you can help!

On Saturday May 6th we have our second Working Bee of the year, this is a great opportunity for teh TPS Community to come together in a relaxed environment, give back to the school and get to know one another.  SIGNUP HERE: https://signup.com/go/CMCRTrF

Feel free to reach out to the Enviro team if you have any questions or would like to help out before the Working Bee on any areas in the gardens or by becoming a Chicken Carer.
