Mabo House Attendance

Hello Mabo Students and Families,

As we approach the end of the term, we want to take a moment to reflect on the hard work and dedication shown by our students this semester. We would like to commend all of our students for their hard work and effort throughout the term. We are proud of your accomplishments in and outside the classroom, from sporting endeavours, Pasifika Choir, Dance Flash Mobs and much more. We encourage you to continue to strive for excellence in all that you do.

Thank you to those who engaged in the student led learning conferences and those who attended the Information Evenings and Open Night.

As the reigning champions of 2022’s House Cup, I would like to celebrate the success of our annual Swimming Carnival last week, where Mabo came in 2nd place. The Carnival was a huge success, with students from all grades participating in various swimming events, including freestyle, breaststroke, and relay races. We were thrilled to see such a high level of participation, enthusiasm, and sportsmanship displayed by our students in and outside the pool. The Swimming Carnival was not only a fun-filled day for our students, but it was also an opportunity to promote the importance of physical fitness and a healthy lifestyle. We are proud of all our students who participated in all events and demonstrated their Mabo Pride!

NAPLAN testing was conducted this term for students in Year 7 and 9. This is the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy, and it is a national standardized test that assesses students' proficiency in literacy and numeracy. We understand that standardized testing can be a stressful time for students, but we want to reassure our students and families that we are committed to providing the support and resources needed to help our students succeed. We have been working hard to prepare our students for the NAPLAN testing, and our teachers have been incorporating NAPLAN-style questions and activities into their lessons. Additionally, would like to thank our families for their work with their children at home to reinforce the skills that were tested.

This week we had our House Assembly where we were able to get together to celebrate student achievement, highlight growth and high achievers in regards to academics and have a bit of fun together. A big thank you to our College Captain Miniya and our House Captain Josh for their leadership of our House Assembly which was a lovely way to finish off the term. We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all students who received awards for living our values. I am so excited to see what the voting will be for our Mabo Mascot (I hope it’s the green tree frog!).

Our Year 9 students engaged in a very special presentation by the Pat Cronin Foundation from  the “Be Wise Program” regarding  Pat’s story of the “coward punch”, and strategies to prevent violence within the community during their Mentor classes this term. This was a very valuable part of their learning program, and it was a powerful discussion that taught our students the impacts of their decision making. Thank you to Mr Cram for his leadership of this event.

On behalf of the Mabo team, I would also like to thank our Mabo parents and caregivers for their continued support and partnership with us in ensuring the success of our students. Your involvement in your child's education is essential to their growth and development, and we appreciate your efforts in working with us to provide the best possible learning experience for your child. A reminder if your child is away please remember to log this on compass and supply a medical certificate to Mabo House as our attendance policy is 95%.

As we move into the next term, we encourage our students to continue to set goals for themselves, work hard, and stay focused on their studies. Remember, your education is a key component of your future success, and we are here to support you every step of the way.

Thank you to our Mabo House team, Miss Hickey, Ms Beattie, Mrs Grove, Mrs Belgrove and Mr Musa, you are so hard working every day, and we appreciate all the support you give to our students, staff and families.

I wish you a safe and restful break and look forward to continuing our work together in the upcoming term.

Sincerely,

Erin Louden
