Teaching and Learning

Room 3

Room 3 have been sharing information about our families and their histories. We discussed how school was different for our parents and our grandparents. Our task was to look at our past, present and future - our favourite memories from the past, and what we think we might be when we are older. Here is some of our amazing work.

Art News

Dear Families,

I wanted to take this opportunity to properly introduce myself. As you may know, West Beach Primary School is now offering a specialist Art lesson once a week to each class. Room 15 has now been converted back into an art room with brand new furniture and resources. I am very excited to be using this space to teach your child. If I may be of any assistance to you with regard to your child. Please feel free to contact me by email on jaimee.inglis984@schools.sa.edu.au

I believe that every individual is a creative being, although creating in different ways. I have high expectations of each student but recognise that all of us create, and express ideas in different ways. I encourage students to create with their own lens and interpret ideas in ways that make sense to their own unique nature. Initially, we will start with some basic skills and knowledge.

Please be assured that I do not expect students to paint like Rembrandt. It is far more important that they learn to appreciate art and the act of creating. We’re not all painters but we are all creative.

I look forward to the year ahead.

Thanks,

Jaimee Inglis

こんにちは

Konnichiwa,

Did you know that people in Japan purchase Daruma to celebrate the New Year?

These Daruma are used to set a goal/wish at the beginning of a new year. Once a goal/wish has been made, one eye is coloured in. The second eye is coloured in when the goal/wish has been achieved.

Rm 11,12 & 14 made their own Daruma out of clay. We think they look great!

Science News

Rooms 11 and 14 have been doing some very interesting experiments on coastal erosion. They had to test different strategies of minimising coastal erosion and evaluate their effectiveness. This was a very hands-on lesson that they enjoyed and demonstrated excellent learning about how coastal erosion is managed on a larger scale.

The Year 3s also did some work on day/night and used torches and polystyrene balls to demonstrate how day and night occurs through Earth's rotation.

Did you know that the Perseverance Rover landed on Mars just recently? You can see footage of the landing on Youtube. Our middle primary students were able to view this footage in class and were very excited about it!

Check it out on this link:

 Physical Education News

It’s been a super exciting few weeks here at WBPS in the PE and Sport Department. We’ve had an excellent number of students put their hand up for events to represent the mighty West Beach PS. I’ve enjoyed working with the cohort of students that take such pride in the doing the very best they can.

A few weeks ago, we had past and present players and coaches from the National Rugby League deliver a workshop for the upper primary students. Some excellent key messages revolved around Resilience, Learning from mistakes, Empathy and Gratitude. Students were engaged listening to stories that we can all learn from. Certainly some topics worth talking about at home. Thank you NRL!

Monday Week 5 we held Swim Trials at Immanuel College. This was a whole new adventure for us seeing our pool out of order. 15 swimmers from WBPS trialled for the WBPS swim team. Too many excellent efforts to name. A big thanks to all the parents who helped out with transport, supervision and timing- we could not have done it without you.

Wednesday Week 6 the West Beach PS Swim Team attended the Airport District SAPSASA Swim Event. For a small school, with only 10 swimmers, we were an absolute power house in the pool.

A big well done to all swimmers who represented WBPS Swim Team: Bella Sherman, Allegra Mazel, Leila Murphy, Gabriel Martel & Neve Murphy.

A special mention to the swimmers with outstanding results:

3rd place

Zara Dobie, 2011: 50m Butterfly & Backstroke

Marissa McKenzie, 2010: 50m Backstroke

Nic Davis, 2010: 50m Freestyle
