International 'Pi' Day
Do you enjoy baking or eating pie in your spare time? Do you love Maths?
Well, World Pi day might be just for you! An entire day dedicated to Maths on Sunday 14th March (3/14 for Americans).
Pi (Greek letter “π”) is the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. After measuring circular objects for thousands of years, it was concluded that a circle is a little over 3 times its width - around 3.14 times.
Each year, a theme is selected to ignite celebrations, spark creativity and bring light to connections between mathematics and all sorts of concepts, fields and ideas.
The theme for 2021 is "Mathematics for a Better World."
As the world faces the Covid-19 pandemic, mathematics provides models and tools to help us understand, monitor and control the virus. It's used to create weather forecasts and to prepare for natural disasters. Mathematics optimises transportation and communication networks and enables smart planning and management of health and economic systems.
At our school, we continue to spark creativity, offering hands-on tools and problem-solving activities, and supporting students to see the connection of Maths in real-life contexts.
