It's never too early to start thinking about becoming an Officer in the Navy, Army or Air Force. A degree will fast-track you into an exciting Officer role, and there are two ways to have your university fees paid for by the ADF.
Have all or part of your degree course paid for, join degree qualified, or work for the ADF in your gap year. Whichever route you choose, enjoy a salary from day one.

Receive military and leadership training in parallel with your university studies, choosing from a wide range of UNSW degree courses at ADFA in Canberra.

The Defence Work Experience Program (DWEP). If you are over 15 years of age the DWEP is a national program that provides high school and tertiary students aged 15 years and older the opportunity to gain exposure to a range of jobs available within the Australian Defence Force and/or the Department of Defence. ADF Cadets. If you are over 12 years and 6 months of age, you can join our youth development program – the Australian Defence Force Cadets. In the Cadets, you’ll develop leadership, team-building and survival skills while having great fun.

An ADF Gap Year is a unique opportunity for students to experience life in the Navy, Army or Air Force, without needing to make a long-term commitment. The skills obtained through the ADF Gap Year program will provide them valuable work and life experience and are completely transferable. It will enable your students to develop the confidence for their next endeavour.

Whatever their interest, there are a variety of roles to select that will provide young Australians valuable life skills. These include experiences as an officer, in management, engineering, logistics and warehousing, combat and security, and administration.
