Library Guides

In the Library we have on our front counter both a senior and junior McCarthy Library Guide to assist our students when navigating the Library. Our “how to” guides are full of important information. From here we encourage students to explore our collection. We also are encouraging our students to ask for help when they need assistance.

Do you have a favourite book character?

We are inviting students and staff to come into the library and vote for your favourite book character. Put a sticker next to your favourite. If your character is not there, write your suggestion on the lines provided below. This will be in the library for a few weeks.

Reading for enjoyment in the Library

We have selected some books from our collection that focus on laughter. Come in and select a book from our reading list recommended for teens who like to read books that make them laugh.

The Premier's Reading Challenge 2021

The Premier's Reading Challenge (PRC) is for students from K-10. It starts on Monday 1 March 2021 and finishes on Friday 20 August 2021. Sign-on details will come through the English classes.

The Library staff are working to support the students who want to participate.  We have over 3,000 titles from the official PRC booklist. Our Library already has over 1200 PRC Booklist titles on the shelves ready to borrow.  These titles are easily searchable in our Oliver Library Catalogue and we can show students how to do this if they are unsure. Additionally, our students have SORA the McCarthy E-Book reader on their Chromebooks and downloadable onto their phones. SORA has over 2,000 PRC Booklist titles, can be accessed 24x7 and we can show students how to do this as well.

Over the coming months we will be holding a variety of library opportunities that prioritize reading for pleasure. These events will be both in class time and during break times, providing students the resources and opportunity to read.

The McCarthy Library Reading Challenge 2021

The McCarthy Library Reading Challenge for senior students and staff is also ready to launch. It is for those members of our community who are not in Year 7-10.  It will run parallel to the official challenge, but will allow our older students and participating staff to complete their own reading challenges alongside our juniors.

We aim to encourage a love of reading and remind our students that the challenge is not a competition but an opportunity to read and to enjoy reading widely.
