BNW's Tutor Program

Despite best efforts from parents & carers, as well as teachers and support staff, the learning progression of students across the state was impacted. In response to this, The Department of Education & Training (DET) resourced a tutor program for all schools in 2021, in response to the reduced learning progression observed across the state in 2020, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and  remote learning programs.

Schools have been asked to develop a program that best suits their community's needs. Information regarding our approach to tutoring can be found in the document linked below.

What will this look like?

Billie (an imaginary student) has always been a good reader, but found it hard to engage during remote learning. Billie's teacher has looked at her reading data and can see that Billie went from being 12 months ahead of the expected achievement range to 'at-level'. Billie is eligible for the tutor program.

Billie's teacher is given additional planning time (while the class is at a specialist subject) to look at Billie's data and prepare small group, targeted instruction for Billie and 3 other kids from Billie's class. Billie will work in this small group for half an hour, three times a week (twice during reading lessons, once during a specialist subject) with her classroom teacher. After six weeks, Billie's teacher will check her progress and update Billie and her family on how she has progressed against her goal.

Billie's teacher will then decide if Billie needs more time to work on her goal.
