Year 9 Community Day

Our Year 9 Community Day was held on Monday 6 December.  An important focus of our day was building respectful relationships, and all staff who attended the day were impressed with the energy and enthusiasm that Year 9 brought to each activity. During the day, students were given the opportunity to move beyond their own friendship group to begin to foster respectful relationships in their Year 9 community.

Our guest speaker, Luke S Kennedy, was an integral part of the day. Luke’s time with our Year 9 group made for an engaging presentation where he was able to share his own story and impress upon students the importance of life choices and the impact of friends as they grow up.

We were able to finish by asking Year 9 to reflect on what they had learnt about ‘Respectful Relationships’ during the day (see pictures below).

We also asked students what they enjoyed and got out of the day - here are some of the responses:

“He [Luke S Kennedy] was such an amazing person. He expressed his vulnerability and changed my perspective on my life and that others' words can  have such an impact on my life.”

“He [Luke S Kennedy]  really encouraged me to go outside of my comfort zone and to not care what others think.”

“He [Luke S Kennedy]  got us to think about whether or not we are being ourselves and how to be ourselves.”

“Things don't happen to us, they happen for us.”

“I learnt that the words I say to myself can affect me more than I realise - but we can achieve anything that we put our mind to. The person we are born with, still lives in us, even if it is deep down.”

I really liked the ending task - writing nice things about everyone.”
