Year 9 International Studies Class

On Monday the 29th of November, our Year 9 International Studies class had a visit from Thom, the Community Development Officer from the Multicultural Council of Wagga Wagga, and Maryam Sulaiman, a young leader from the Yazidi community in Wagga. The class has been studying ‘Culture on the Move’ and have been learning about asylum seekers and refugees, how and why they leave, their journey, what occurs on their arrival to Australia, and what life has been like since their arrival. Thom’s knowledge of refugees provided further insight into what life is really like for refugees. Listening to Maryam, and others like her, speak is extremely beneficial, hearing endlessly valuable points of views and experiences. The class has extended their knowledge and understanding through this visit, and we have seen another side of the lives of refugees that may have otherwise not been understood to its full extent.
