Female Basketball Report

For the Spring 2021-2022 season, College have entered a total of nine Female teams from U10’s to Division 4 Women’s. The U10 Snowy Owls have had a strong start to the 2021 season, spending the past four rounds learning key skills and knowledge needed for this fierce game. The Boobook Owls U12A team currently sit first on the ladder after winning three games. Key players include Yolonda O’Sullivan who scored a total of 40 points and Elsie Brown who has scored a total of 56 points after their first three games. Sitting 4th on the ladder, the U12B Sooty Owls have begun the season with 1 win and 2 loses with Poppy Shepherd being a dominant player. Working together as a team on both ends of the court, the U14B Sooty Owls are sitting 4th on the ladder with 1 win under their belts defeating Tigers 23 – 7. While our U16A Majestic Owls haven’t yet won a game in their cut-throat competition, the girls are consistently working hard to ensure they have a win when the season continues early February next year. Our U16B teams are currently sitting 2nd and 3rd on the ladder with the Barn Owls having two wins and one loss, and Snowy Owls with one win and two loses. The Barn and Snowy Owls have versed one another twice during the season, both winning one game each with Grace Potter and Belle Wallis being prime players both offensively and defensively for the Barn Owls, and Sophie Spence and Olivia Rees being primary players for the Snowy Owls. The U18 Masked Owls currently sit 4th on the ladder close behind Minders with Chloe Frost being a key offensive player and Diamon Dickeson dominating in her defence.

Our Division 4 Sooty Owls have had a solid start to the senior season currently sitting 2nd on the ladder after winning all four of their games. Their dedication and teamwork suggests for a placing in the top 4 towards the end of the season. Thank you to all players and parents for your commitment to trainings and games with an interrupted start to the season. After such a strong start from all College teams, we look forward to an uninterrupted second half of the season in 2022 and stay tuned for some exciting new opportunities to come for all our keen basketballers.

Boys' Basketball Report

The first half of the 2021/2022 spring basketball season is coming to a close with many of our boys’ teams, and players performing well. Our Under 18 teams in both A and B competitions are looking promising. Ted Koch is leading our U18A team, the Boobook Owls to a 2-2 record averaging 24 ppg, and who recently went off for massive 37 points, their performances have them placed 3rd on the ladder going into the break. whilst in our U18B competition, the college Barn Owls top the ladder with a dominant 3-0 record lead by Ben Potter, and 2nd on the ladder is held by the Sooty Owls who also have a 3-0 record.

Our U16 teams are dominating their respective competition with the U16A Barking Owls sitting alone with a perfect 4-0 record and a 215%-win margin. The Barking Owls are being led by Jack Sobey, who’s averaging 20 ppg, and Oscar Hausler and look like a lock to make the finals. Our U16B team, the Masked owls sit second on the ladder with a 3-1 record, being led by Harry croft and Angus Frost, special thanks to Harry, Angus and Jude Alexander for playing up in the U16A competition while the year eights were on camp.

Our U14A Barn Owls are 0-4 and are trying hard to win a game, in what is a fierce competition. The U14B Wise owls are tied 3 ways for first at 3 wins, however percentage points have them sitting at 3rd on the ladder led by Jack Mann.

Special congratulations to Jack Sobey for making the Ballarat Gold Nuggets team, 252 players selected to attend the camp at Bendigo Stadium on 13 November and only the best were chosen for selection to the 2022 Country Metro Challenge, which will replace the teams usually selected for the Australian Country Junior Basketball Cup (ACJBC) and Southern Cross Challenge (SCC). This is quite the achievement as only the best of players make it, many professional players (such as Mathew Dellavedova, NBA player and Olympian) took these camps as part of their journey to stardom.

Thank you to all the coaches and managers and parents who helped the first half of the season run so smoothly, we look forward to a successful and uninterrupted finish to the season and finals in March.

Finally, I would like to thank all cricketing parents for your support and commitment to the junior program at the College Cricket Club over the past two years. I have never been at a club where parents do so much and it has made my role as Head of Cricket much easier. To the coaches, both past and present, your help and dedication is incredible and the guidance and training is always appreciated. Finally, to Lachy Patterson, Leigh Alexander, Angus Brown, Heath Schmidt, Lou Williams and the many others I have called upon to help whenever I have needed to, the contributions you make to the College Cricket Club are immeasurable. Heinrich Burmeister will take over as Head of Cricket. Heinrich has taught at the school for several years and will be a great asset to our cricket community..

It has been a privilege to be Head of Cricket and I wish you and your families a safe and Merry Christmas and hopefully a COVID free New Year.

Racquet Sports Report

In the first week of November, the tennis season started with gusto. For the first time, The Hamilton and Alexandra College has entered a team into the Men’s Monday night competition. This is a very high standard and the team has collectively risen and have grown stronger and stronger each week. This year we have entered a young Ladies’ Thursday night team and they are improving each week. If you would like to play in the Monday, Wednesday or Thursday night competitions for The College then please contact Mrs Winter Cooke, these competitions will start very early in Term 1 next year.

College Student’s Success: Amelie Shrive (year 5) was one of two girls selected to represent the South West Region in the Alicia Molic Cup (12 & U) at Kooyong over the weekend. 15 Melbourne metro and regional teams competed over 2 days. Amelie played some very solid tennis and notched up some great wins against quality opponents. The metro teams proved too strong over the weekend taking out the Cup.  Amelie and the South West Team are to be commended on their excellent sportsmanship. They received many comments on their team’s fairness and on court behaviour from their competitors. A fantastic experience, congratulations Amelie!
