Persuasive Writing in Year 3

Anna Rowe and Shauna Kavanagh, Year 3 Teachers

Last week, we commenced our focus on persuasive writing. We looked at persuasive pieces and worked to sequence the content of these into their correct order.

We are also currently exploring ways to ‘level up’ our persuasive writing, such as by using words and phrases and arguments that are designed to influence the reader’s perspective.

It's been so much fun learning the art and craft of persuasive writing!

Numeracy and HASS in Year 5

Alice Stevens and Dorothy Ma, Year 5

Recently, we have been learning about maps and BOLTSS (border, orientation, legend, scale and source). These features are very important when people are making maps, as they help others to understand what different types of maps are telling us.

To put these skills into practice, in Year 5F we designed our own ‘Autobiography Island.’ We used BOLTSS as a guide and made up questions about the coordinates on our maps. We then shared and discussed our maps with a partner.

These are now on display in our classroom and we think they look great!

International Women's Day breakfast

On Wednesday 8 March, we held our International Women's Day breakfast at Dalton Hall.

This year's theme was 'embracing equity'. Sally Kenney, our School psychologist, shared some invaluable insights and data relating to inequity for indigenous women, the gender pay gap, homelessness and superannuation.

School Co-Captains Diya Matthew and Felix McShane spoke about what International Women's Day means to them. We also enjoyed musical performances by Renae Bekas and Freya Watters. It was a great morning!

Year 9 French – Let’s discover the French Café culture!

Alex Verginis, Year 9

Bonjour! My name is Alex Verginis and I am a student in Year 9.

Currently, the French classes have been studying a unit on French café culture.

As part of the topic, at the end of term all French students in Year 9 are going to attend an excursion at a nearby French café, where we can put our knowledge to the test by ordering food and enjoying dining with friends.

This trip will not only help us to learn more about French food and culture, but will also provide us with an opportunity to connect with others who may speak French.

Additionally, during the past week my peers and I have been able to take part in a cooking session with our French teacher, Mme Dickens, as well as drink menthe à l’eau in class.

The cooking session took place in the food tech classrooms at Kilvington, where our teacher taught us her version of quiche and some helpful tips for preparing the pastry. This lesson was thoroughly fun and enjoyable and a great learning experience for us all.

We were also accompanied by Mme Paulin (our other Languages teacher) as well as students from the other Year 9 French class. Funnily enough, many of the teachers and students who were walking down the nearby hallway also wanted to try some - that’s how delicious the quiche was!

In our latest French class, we had the opportunity to taste menthe à l’eau (meaning peppermint water that's coloured green), a famous drink in France. It was a class favourite - one which we all loved!

Merci to Kilvington and all Languages teachers for these great opportunities!
