St Ed's basketball has come to an end for all of our teams with a successful year of sportsmanship and improved skills. Our Year 6 teams played their final games as students of St Edward's. Here is a report from Corey, Sam and Izaac.
Basketball Report for the St Edward's Hurricanes:
This season has been fantastic, with only a few losses. We all improved throughout the season as a result of Mr Short's training and his willingness to sacrifice his own time to help us. Unfortunately, we did not make it to the Grand Final, although we were only one point away. But thanks to the team, Mr Short and the school, we would not have made it to the Semi-Finals without them.
Thank You Mr Short
Without Mr Short giving up his free time to develop us into better players and a better team overall, we would not have progressed as far in our basketball season. He taught us to never be negative and to always work hard until the very end. Thank you Mr Short!
This Friday will see 13 of our students participate in the Armidale Diocese Summer Trials for tennis, basketball and cricket. If selections are successful, the students will travel to various locations early next year to trial for the Polding Team. Good luck to all of our students.
All information and programs were sent via an email on Compass. If you have missed this, please see attached programs.
Cricket: Cooper Jones, Harrison Cooper, William Jefferys, Rory MacRae and Felicity Shields
Tennis: Jackson Hicks
Basketball: Stella Damon, Emily O'Connell, William Wilson, Mason Marzato, Barry Robinson, William Barrett and Koby Fenwick.
Inter School Sports Day
Girls Basketball
By Olivia & Chelsea
Before we start this report we would like to thank the two schools for spending their time with us and a massive thanks to Marty Hatton for refereeing and umpiring the games. But this would not have happened if we did not have the teachers to supervise. One more big thank you to Mrs Gippel for organising this amazing day from start to finish.
We knew that St Joey's didn't have a team for us to play against but we were still able to vs St Nicholas. We sadly lost with the finishing score as 7-21 but we were not finished there. Although we didn't win this game we still loved it.
Our last game was a teachers vs students game in basketball. With Olivia refereeing the game, everything was going smoothly before Mr Peachy and Mr Casson walked onto the court! We knew we were not going to win unless the students could start hitting some 3 pointers or lay ups. With the finishing score as 15-5 the teachers had won.
We got to play netball as well against St Nicholas winning 12-6. But they had Mrs D as their defence and shooter. We had the basketball ring down but no one was allowed to use the backboard and it was easier with the shots because the ring was bigger.
Inter School Sports Day
Boys Basketball
The boys also played at the Inter School Challenge. All three schools had basketball teams in the boys division. Our St Ed's team unfortunately did not come out undefeated, however the games were extremely close and enjoyed by all.
Inter School Sports Day
OzTag
Ebony P and Jacinta-Dean H
Last Friday, St Nicholas and St Joseph's came to St Ed's to participate in basketball and OzTag. St Ed's had a boys and girls OzTag team participating. We played 4 games of OzTag each and the 4th game was a final between the two best teams, St Nichs boys vs St Ed's Girls (this was also a rematch). St Ed's girls won 6 tries to 3. The girls were undefeated the whole day. It was a fun day as everyone got in and had a go at running the ball and tagging. It was 4 friendly games, with no arguing and great sportsmanship, and seeing if people were okay if they got hurt.
Team Building Exercises Report
Rhyarna Turner
Last Friday St Ed’s participated in an Inter School Sporting Challenge with St Nicholas and St Joseph's. For students who weren’t playing sports, we were lucky enough to participate in some team building challenges. One of the challenges was ‘Cup Towers’. The aim of this activity is to make a cup tower by only using rubber bands and string. In my vision, my group tied the string to the rubber bands to use the string to stretch out the rubber band and get a grip on the cup and put it down. The teachers planned this as a team-building activity because you needed more than one person to use the rubber bands and string. You could also bond while trying to make the tower. It was so much fun! Another activity was the ‘marshmallow tower’. The aim of this activity was to make a marshmallow tower using skewers and toothpicks to make the highest marshmallow tower possible. We had to share our ideas to find a way to make it high and we also had a chat while doing it. It was a good way to make friends from other schools while doing a fun activity!
Congratulations to the U10’s St Edwards Representative Netball Team who were nominated and awarded finalists for the Junior Sports Team of the Year Award at the Tamworth Regional Council Sports Awards held at Wests League Club on 25th November 2022.
The team had the pleasure of meeting special guests, Newcastle Jets FC. The team included: Ivy Allan, Sienna Erich, Sunny Jackson, Emma McMahon, Madeline Noad, Makenzie Smith and Charlotte Steel. Sunny was absent from the awards ceremony on the night.
Last weekend saw a number of students compete in the Little Athletics Zone Carnival. All of the students who participated did so with great determination and aspirations to beat their PB (Personal Best). Thank you to Reya Erich for sharing Sienna's results. Sienna came 3rd in 400m, 2nd in hurdles, 1st in 100m, 1st in 200m. Sienna was also picked to be a part of the Junior Relay Team who came First Place.
Congratulations to the following students for all their achievements at the carnival also: Pyper Lace, Ashton Jeffrey, Isaac Heywood, Charlie Hague, Emily O'Connell, Isabel O'Connell and Miley Jeffrey.
Braxton and Charles, together with another girl, were successful at the weekend in receiving Junior Championships at the Manilla Team Penning Event. The boys managed this achievement after facing the week prior with sickness and not knowing whether they would be able to ride due to it. The cattle were so tough and many adults including ourselves (the boys' parents) were not able to pen quick enough. The boys did though! Winning shiny new buckles for their belts and all.
Just a little reminder to pay the Sport and School Activity Levy if you haven't already done so. This levy covers buses to and from the Primary Campus, to and from sporting events, gymnastics, tennis and the hire of both the swimming pool and athletics track. Please check on your Compass portal whether this needs to be updated.
We would love to share information about your child’s special achievements across all sporting areas, please email detailed information and a photograph if available to the Sports Coordinator, Mrs Gippel, at: nmcculloch@arm.catholic.edu.au
