Introducing Ellie Moorby

Hello, My name is Ellie Moorby and I am the new Co-boarding Captain at Mount Erin. I come from a small town called Cootamundra and I started boarding in Year 11 at the beginning of this year. Even though my experience at Mount Erin has had some COVID related challenges this year, I have made friendships and memories that will last a lifetime.

At Mount Erin, I have been given many great opportunities. The boarding school provides service to both Kildare and Mater Dei, and I have made friendships across both schools as well as across many year groups. I am enjoying my new role as Boarding Co-captain. In the coming year, our student leadership team will create new activities to help the boarding school to grow and thrive as a strong community.

As I have just started Year 12, I am working very hard on my studies. Each night I go to my room and study for the recommended amount of time, as well as some extra time. Due to COVID-19 we are restricted to onsite activities, however, our year group is enjoying coming together for activities and games on campus.

The boarding school feels like my second home - everyone has welcomed us in especially Mrs Bradford, our Senior Supervisor, who is encouraging us to work hard and make good decisions. All the senior girls are very pleased to have her as our supervisor.

Introducing Kayla Smit

Hello, I am Kayla Magdalena Smit. The name seems foreign and you're right, it is and so am I. This little piece is a brief overview of my schooling experience in Australia since my immigration from South Africa. My family came in 2016, so I was new to the school system within Australia.

One difference I have encountered is that Year 7 in South Australia is a part of primary school with Year 8 commencing at high school.

Moving to NSW I was then enrolled at McAuley Catholic Central School in Tumut for Years 8-10 (although this could’ve changed as the Principal asked me which year I would like to be, Year 8 or 9). I chose Year 8, even though it meant an extra year of schooling as we did emigrate for a better education and job opportunities for my brother and myself.

After Year 10 at McAuley I chose to  board here at Wagga for Year 11 and 12.   Now I have successfully become part of Boarding and the College and have made numerous friendships with amazing individuals. I truly feel part of the community and accepted for who I am.

Senior Boys

Ethan Watt and Eli Williams
Ethan Watt and Eli Williams

We are now well into Term 4 with the senior boys boarders being kept busy balancing a range of activities and their academic studies. In the lead up to the State of Origin series, very few of the senior boys boarders have shared their supervisor’s passion for the great State of Queensland.

Jack Beavan and Owen Williams
Jack Beavan and Owen Williams

Jack Beavan and Owen Williams spent last week completing their second period of Work Experience, with Jack working with a builder and Owen working with a plasterer. Both boys reported learning a great deal and the feedback from their employers was excellent. Well done Jack and Owen!

This week Mason Crain, Aidan Jones, Johnny Holz, Jaxson McGuire and Jacob Spicer completed their HSC exam as part of the Studies of Religion 1 Course offered at both MDCC and KCC.

Well done to all five boys on their excellent work ethic in preparing for their first experience of HSC exams.

L to R: Max, Joseph, Isaac, Mikey, William, Eli

Mount Erin Boarding has been well represented during the Ramsay Cup Inter-school Rugby Union competition. Mikey Fenney, William Ward, Isaac Gray, Bodean Tereva, Joseph Morton and Eli Williams are representing the KCC First XV, while Max Peterson and Jack Kelleher are representing the MDCC First XV.

The KCC team has won their first two games against MDCC (30 to 15) and Wagga Wagga High School (62 to 7), with Eli Williams scoring tries in both matches. The MDCC team won their second match against Kooringal High School (31 to 12), but unfortunately injury appears to have prematurely ended the season of both Jack and Max.

Well done to both Nick Madden (KCC) and Max Peterson (MDCC) who are representing their respective College's First XI cricket team in the Downie Shield inter-school competition.

The new pool table, barely a few hours after positioning, receives a good work out by the senior boys.
