NAIDOC Week Celebration - Traditional Games

Students enjoyed playing a variety of traditional games from the ‘Yulunga Traditional Indigenous Games’ resource (https://www.sportaus.gov.au/yulunga). We discussed the background behind the games and traditional language and equipment used. Here are the games which each subschool played which linked with our current subschool Physical Education focuses:

Junior School - Fundamental Movement Skills

We’me- A ball rolling game similar to Bocce and Lawn Bowls where you attempt to roll a ball to hit another ball out of a set area.

Pir-rha - A ball spinning game to see who can spin the ball the longest.

Middle School - Strategy/Target Games

We’me- A ball rolling game similar to Bocce and Lawn Bowls where you attempt to roll a ball to hit another ball out of a set area.

Kolap - A target game where you attempt to land closest to a set target.

Bur-oin-jin - A running and passing ball game where players have to work together as a team to get the ball from one end to the other without being touched.

Senior School -Strategy/Target/Striking Games

Bur-oin-jin - A running and passing ball game where players have to work together as a team to get the ball from one end to the other without being touched.

Kal-q - A ball striking game where you use a bat to hit a ball continuously to players on your team, similar to Table Tennis/Tennis.

Kolap - A target game where you attempt to land closest to a set target.

Every game led to great discussions about the similarities of these games with those that are played by many of the students today. By participating in these games it allowed students to gain a better understanding of the history of the traditional owners of the land and the games that they created and played.
