Understanding the Maths Learner

Term 4 Curriculum Day - Launching Maths@CSPS

Monday 2nd of November was a big day for our maths team at CSPS. This was the day we launched with a new vibrancy to our current maths program.  The maths team presented to all the staff our approach to what, why, how and when we teach maths@CSPS.

Why we do what we do

“If we cultivate a culture of mathematical curiosity and creativity, then students, teachers and families will influence greater positive attitudes in mathematical achievement.”

Our maths curriculum follows the philosophy of Jo Boaler and Carol Dweck's work on mathematical mindsets. All students know that it takes hard work to be good at maths and anyone can do hard work. Students use Cooperative Learning to work together to share ideas, conjectures and justify their thinking.

Our philosophy is also about the type of maths learners we want to see @CSPS. We want maths learners that think about maths from different angles and lenses. Then we want them to talk about their ideas and assumptions while listening to their peers. We want them to have all the tools and strategies at their fingertips to be able to work it out. Finally, we want maths learners that can prove their ideas through reasoning and justifying.

What we do

Teachers follow a scope and sequence of skill progression for each year level. This is a heavily researched based scope that looks at the integration of place value across all sub-strands of maths making maths connections more apparent and authentic. Teachers use department resources, coaching and mentoring, planning as well as professional development to support their knowledge to teach maths really well.

How we do what we do

We facilitate a learning environment for students to develop the knowledge, skills and strategies. We develop lessons to ensure higher-order thinking, inquiring and collaboration. Engagement is the first step to making maths fun alleviating any maths anxiety. Cooperative Learning is at the centre of all learning at CSPS and is the nucleus of a great maths lesson.

When we do what we do

Next year we will be embarking on a new assessment journey with the community in mind. We will be looking into ongoing assessment in maths. Ongoing assessment tells us when to assess the learning of our students so students can get timely feedback from teachers and parents. Most of all ongoing assessment will allow students the voice to decide how they would like to continue to develop their learning through authentic learning goals.

Maths@CSPS has an exciting buzz that we are all feeling. teachers and students have been enjoying maths learning across the school. We can't wait for what 2021 will bring.

Amazing Maths Lessons @CSPS

The senior students created towers with the largest volume. They had to measure and calculate the volume, estimate which they thought were the largest and smallest, while also ensuring they were free-standing.
