Parish Bulletin

St Mary’s Parish Prayer

God our Father, as we thank you for the blessings, we ask you to bless this Parish of yours, so that we may love you more.

Encircle our families with your loving care.

Help parents to be good examples to their

children and our youth to grow in strength as good Christians.

To the sick grant health, to the aged bring serenity and to those in sorrow, joy.

May we grow stronger in faith and may

our love for one another become deeper

in our daily living.

We make this through the intercession of our Mother Mary.  Amen

NEW - Focus on the Readings

This Sunday is traditionally known as Good Shepherd Sunday. Two major themes emerge from the readings: an image of the one who saves; and the power of salvation itself. The one who saves is not a mighty warrior who comes in military array. In fact, he is the one who was rejected, who was hunted down, humiliated, tortured and hung naked on a tree, there to die in shame. The one who saves is the cornerstone of the building, holding it together, forming a firm foundation so that the structure will not collapse. The one who saves is a lowly shepherd, entrusted with sheep, not with the affairs of state. The one who saves is an unlikely saviour. This characterisation should give us pause. Is it possible that we have been looking for a saviour in the wrong places?

God’s saving power flows from steadfast covenant love. It broke open the world in the death and resurrection of Jesus and it overflows as healing grace. The saving power in the name of Jesus, a name that itself means ‘saviour’ (cf. Matt 1:21), is for all people, even for those sheep who do not yet belong to this fold. Furthermore, it is for all time; God’s mercy endures forever. Through our baptism we can bring the saving grace of God to a world in desperate need of healing. We can do this in our families, in our local communities, in the workplace, in so many situations of our lives.

New - Liturgical Jottings - Easter Sunday & Anzac Day

Sundays of Easter take precedence over any other Solemnities, Feasts or Days of Commemoration. While the second Sunday of Easter is subtitled Divine Mercy Sunday, and the fourth Sunday subtitled Good Shepherd Sunday, the readings and prayers are those of the Sundays of Easter. The special Mass text “The Mercy of God” cannot be used. (RM p 1393) on the Second Sunday of Easter. Likewise the Anzac Day Mass (RM p 892) with its own prayers and readings cannot be used. However the Easter prayers and readings will provide suitable text for remembering the fallen and Anzac themes can find expression in the music, homily, intercessions and the church decorations. Aust/NZ Ordo 2021 p 62

New - Feast Day

Wednesday 28 April, St Peter Chanel,

Born in France, he joined the Marist Fathers and travelled to Western Oceania. Despite little success and severe want, he maintained a serene and gentle spirit. When the chieftain’s son asked to be baptised, persecution reached a climax. Fr Chanel was clubbed to death. Within two years, the whole island became Catholic and has remained so. He was canonised in 1954, first martyr of Oceania and its patron saint.

New - Quote of the Day

Brothers and sisters, let us set out for these pastures where we shall keep joyful festival with so many of our fellow citizens. May the thought of their happiness urge us on! Let us stir up our hearts, rekindle our faith, and long eagerly for what heaven has in store for us. To love thus is to be already on our way. Homily St Gregory the Great, (pope 590-604) PL 76, 1129- 1130

NEW - A PRAYER for ANZAC DAY

Gracious and loving God, the cross of Christ is the sign of your desire for justice and peace for all.  Open our minds to your vision as we      remember all who suffered through Australia and New Zealand’s involvement in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations. Grant all servicepersons who sacrificed health and life for the good of all, the gift of your deep peace. May we who inherit the freedom for which they fought become instruments of your peace in our homes, workplaces and world.

We ask this prayer through Christ our Lord,   AMEN

NEW - On the Lighter Side

In 2011 Anzac Day was on Easter Monday. Someone asked me at that time does Anzac Day ever fall on Easter Sunday. I said rarely first time in 1943 and next in 2038. Easter Sunday was on 25 April in 1886 but, of course, it was not Anzac Day then.
