Championing Victorian Industry within Schools

The Championing Victorian Industry within Schools event, held on 25 March 2021, celebrated and applauded the outstanding businesses and employers who established or maintained relationships with schools and students.

The event recognised employers providing valuable workplace learning support for students through programs such as Head Start, school-based apprenticeships and traineeships, Structured Workplace Learning and work experience opportunities.

The event was attended by Acting Premier James Merlino who expressed the importance of work experience and thanked the many industry representatives in the room.

“Every student, no matter where they go to school, should have access to high quality vocational and applied learning options….. We want to offer students the right pathway for them”  - James Merlino Minister for Education & Acting Premier.

Luci Rueben, VCAL Curriculum and Assessment/Pathways Leader from Surf Coast Secondary College was a guest panellist and spoke brilliantly on how her school has integrated the Head Start program as an option for students.  She spoke about the importance of work experience opportunities for students and the support of the additional programs such as the Head Start Barwon support for School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships.

Sharing one student story, Luci highlighted how the Head Start program has worked to assist her students navigate a career pathway.

“…the most gorgeous kid, as they all are, but a little bit lost and a little bit unsure of herself a little bit anxious and then Katrina (Barwon Head Start Coordinator) rings me and says I think I have this opportunity for her.  We get her in and she had the BEST DAY and you couldn’t change that grin off her face. And it hasn’t left.  Since she started back… in her SBAT the changes in her and her work ethic and motivation to finish year 12 it’s just one of many examples ”

Head Start Barwon invited several local partners to the event. The following Geelong businesses, who have supported a number of Head Start Apprentices in their workplace joined the Barwon team and Region representatives on the day.  We thank, Lake and Land, The Break Artisan Bakery, Hanlon Industries and the 60+ other local employers for their ongoing support of the Head Start program.

Qualifications are available in a range of industries, so if you’re a student looking for a pathway into employment, a parent looking for a secure future for your child, or an employer looking for your next apprentice, contact the Careers & Pathways Team at your Victorian State Government School about the Head Start Program!
