Great Ocean Road Committee Marine Walks

From 23 - 27 April, 'Possum Pete' took each of our Year 7 classes down to Rocky Point for a walk along the Torquay Surf Beach and adjacent clifftops. Students were given the opportunity to learn about the unique biodiversity present in their local area as well as current land and sustainability practices in use to protect these fragile ecosystems.

It was great to see the engagement from the students as they tapped into the wealth of knowledge Pete has to offer. Students will use the information gathered on these walks for further research tasks back at school over the term.

NAPLAN

Our Year 7 and 9 students are currently completing the National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) testing. All students in these year levels at Surf Coast Secondary College will complete the paper version of the test.

At Surf Coast Secondary College, we place a strong emphasis on the development of Literacy and Numeracy skills. These two key areas are essential skills that students need to succeed in everyday life and to flourish in all subjects at school. Improving students’ literacy and numeracy skills can have a positive effect on their confidence and their ability to deal with everyday tasks.

The results from these tests inform teachers and parents of each student’s progress against nationally agreed minimum standards for literacy and numeracy at each of the year levels participating. Teachers across our College use the tracking and analysis of these results (paired with other data) to inform their teaching, planning and programming, as well as to assess when individual interventions may be necessary. The NAPLAN results, when combined with other information such as examples of class work, subject assessments and individual student’s school reports, enable us to form a broader and deeper picture of each student’s reading, writing, spelling, grammar use and numeracy skills. This helps with the identification of strengths and areas for improvement for each student.  A new feature of the NAPLAN assessment is being launched this year, with the award of Year 9 Certificates of Achievement. The new certificates aim to celebrate and recognise the importance of both excellence and learning growth. Beginning in 2021, Year 9 students who achieve outstanding results or who significantly improve their results in NAPLAN tests will receive a NAPLAN Certificate of Achievement. The certificates will be awarded for two categories of achievement:- Category one: the achievement of excellence through getting a result in the top band for reading or numeracy, or both.

- Category two: the achievement of outstanding learning growth through improve by two or more bands between the NAPLAN Year 7 and Year 9 tests for reading or numeracy, or both. For more information about the new certificate and measures for learning growth, refer to Year 9 NAPLAN certificates of achievement on the Department’s website.

We are always proud of all of our students when they strive to do their best and look forward to celebrating each one of them as the flourish.

Year 8

Beau B in 8D was nominated “Chef of the Day” with his delectable meringue presentation. Well done Beau!

Art

Last week our Year 8 students explored the art of etching and how to

create contrast through texture. Congratulations to Tyson S and Isaac A for their leadership and striving to establish new skills and working as a team.

Year 9

Debating

Mikayla W, Charlotte B, Zoe D, Ella W, Julius K and Leila S.

Every fortnight, Geelong Grammar hosts a round of debating where schools from across Geelong unite and compete in an epic intellectual contest. We saw students in Year 9 and Year 11 prepared and work hard for their first event which they participated in. They proudly represented Surf Coast Secondary College and were the only state school to compete, which is also an amazing achievement! The Year 9 students defeated their Geelong College opponents on the topic: Governments should subsidise regional travel.

Special mention to Zoe D in Year 9 who was awarded ‘best speaker’ in the debate!  Thank you to the teachers and families who supported all students in preparing and triumphing in this challenge. Next week they compete against Kardinia College and we wish them the best of luck!

Senior Students

Barwon Club Concert

On Wednesday 28 April, students commenced their first of a series of essential performance assessments that must be undertaken to satisfy a number of units of competency and prepare for their performance exam.

School of Philanthropy

On 26 April, Year 12 VCAL students presented to board members from The Geelong Community Foundation at the Geelong Library for their final outcome in their Schools of Philanthropy community project. Our students embodied all of our SURF school values and represented our school to an exemplar standard. We are proud of all the hard work our students have completed in the lead up to the presentation.

Although speaking in front of a large audience is a hard thing to do, our VCAL students demonstrated grit, determination and resilience in their spectacular presentation. We hope that you are just as proud of yourselves as we are of each and every one of you.
