PRINCIPAL'S REPORT

Erin Wright - Principal

Strive

Our College Captains, Maya and Jason, along with Vice Captains, Tyson and Shari, have been very active in the College and wider community this year. We have met with politicians, paid our respects to our servicemen for ANZAC Day, held regular meetings as a team to plan and reflect and also begun preparations for some student events such as the College Senior School Formal this term. Whilst our Captains have been keeping busy as a team themselves, an important role that they play is to be role modelling what leadership means and how it can effectively be enacted through Student Voice at the College. Our Captains had their first meeting with the student leaders at other year levels on Tuesday 04 May. They used strategies that they learned from their Y-Lead camp at the start of the year to ‘break the ice’ and get to know the younger students before engaging in some work on discussing and collaborating on some important issues.

We would like to recognise the Student Leaders across our College and look forward to sharing more of their collaborative work across the year.

Unite

IDAHOBIT Day is on Monday 17 May and is an important occasion for the College to recognise and participate in this international day against discrimination of LGBTQI+ individuals. Mrs O’Neill and Mr Gleeson have been supporting a group of passionate SCSC students to arrange some events to recognise this occasion, but most importantly to give our young people an opportunity to celebrate our diversity and emphasise our culture of inclusion and acceptance. We will be marking the day with a College assembly, which will be our first one as a whole school for a LONG time! We are very excited to be able to all get back together and to share our celebrations as a community in these gatherings once again.

Respect

Our College Captains and myself were fortunate to host Federal Shadow Minister for Education, Tanya Plibersek at the College on Monday 26 April. Tanya was accompanied by local member, MP Libby Coker. We were the only school visited by Tanya in her visit to the area as she was eager to see our innovative approaches and spaces. A large focus of our conversation was around the issues being experienced by young people related to relationships, respect, diversity and consent. Tanya and Libby also facilitated a community forum that evening at the Torquay Football Club rooms to discuss women’s issues. The teaching of consent in all government schools in an age-appropriate way from Foundation to Year 12 is mandatory as of this year. Whilst students across year levels at SCSC have had regular opportunities to engage in education and open, informed discussions about consent, we will be engaging staff in reviewing our curriculum, processes and also improving their capacity to provide quality instruction and guidance to our young people.

Flourish

This is the tenth year of Surf Coast Secondary College being the fabulous school that it is since we first opened in 2012. Our College Captains are working with the rest of the Student Leaders on creating a time capsule to mark the occasion, and we have a few other ideas that we would love some parent/community support to put into action. In particular, we are planning to host a reunion event in Term Four where past students, staff and parents/carers would be welcome to attend. We would love some current parents/carers to join a working party to help our College Principal, Erin Wright, plan this event. The first working part meeting will be on Monday 24 May at 5:00pm in the College’s main staffroom. If you would like to join the working party, please let Erin know via email at Erin.Wright@education.vic.gov.au.
