Sports Wrap Up
The sporting facilities at the College have been very busy since the beginning of term with the College athletics carnival, MCS Basketball trials commencing and MCS spring sports starting their season.
Athletics
There was no easing back into the term with the Annual College athletics carnival being held on the second day of term 3. We were blessed with perfect athletics conditions and all boys arriving with excitement to compete. Each event is split into a competitive and non-competitive arena allowing all boys either to compete for a spot in the college athletics team or to compete against their mates for fun. As the day went by, many fantastic results came in and the points tally began to rise. The competition became fierce particularly during the senior high jump and the 4 x 100 relays, which finishes right in front of the whole crowd.
The final scores were:
House Points
- Donovan: 4019 points
- Molloy: 3967 points
- Laurentian: 3945 points
- Kilian: 3314 points
The MCS carnival will be held on Thursday 30th August at Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre.
Volleyball
For the first time in the College’s history, we have introduced a volleyball team. On Saturday 21 July, four St Greg’s Volleyball teams travelled to Sydney Olympic Park to compete in their first ever tournament.
Volleyball has been a Thursday school sport option for the past two and a half years, but because there is not an MCS competition, the boys have only had the opportunity to train and play against each other. St Greg’s entered two under 17’s teams and two under 15’s teams in the competition that saw teams come from around Sydney and NSW and also included a touring school team from Argentina.
Under 17A’s – Hayden Wulff, Gabriel Bondal Dagami, Matthew Mitchell, Mark Ombina, Dylan Ruiters and Ernesto Guntan.
The under 17A team started the day with a good win over Cumberland High School, then were very narrowly defeated in their next two games against Tempe High School and the Argentinian Team from Northlands High School. The boys improved in every game and pushed the experienced teams from Tempe and Northlands right to the end.
Under 17B’s – Chandler Villaneuva, Martyn Phan, Aaron Philip, Luke Davis, Tommy Wraith and Blake McKenna.
The under 17B team came up against older and more experienced teams in their pool. They won a set against the team from Wingham High School and their performance improved in each game throughout the day.
Under 15B’s – Zion Agoo, Chase Missen, Ryan Carter, Zachary Evans, Ethan Toby, Ben Anderson
The youngest and most inexperienced team in the competition, the under 15B’s approached every game with enthusiasm and energy. They were no match for the experience and size of some of the other teams, but should be proud of the improvement they showed throughout the day.
Under 15A’s – Riley Kingsell, Archie Berthon, Rahul Lal, Oisin Chretien, Henry Usher, Alex Pucovski (coached by Zak Hackett of year 12)
The under 15A team started the day with a convincing win over one of the Baulkham Hills teams. They then followed this with a win over our 15B team, before being defeated by an older and more experienced team from Chester Hill High School.
They met the Chester Hill team again in the Grand Final and put up a good fight before going down in two close sets to finish runners-up on the day.
All four teams were praised by the organisers for the way in which they conducted themselves both on and off the court.
A big thank you to Mrs Bevington for coming along on the day as well as to Zak Hackett who came to coach the 15A’s and also to Hayden Wulff, Gabriel Bondal Dagami and Aaron Philip who stepped up to help the junior teams by coaching and refereeing when needed.
Thanks also to the many family members who came on the day to support the boys – your presence was greatly appreciated.
The next BHV Junior Cup is on Saturday October 27th, and we are already in training!
Basketball
With over 90 boys trialling for our 5 basketball teams, this is the largest group ever to trial. By starting trials during sport on a Thursday at the beginning of Term 3, this will allow coaches to see the boys over a number of weeks in different game situations. This year the coaching staff will be Ms Giles, Mr Perna, Mr Limbrey, Mr Ivancic and Ms Doherty. Just a reminder that Wednesday morning training commences at 6:30am.
I look forward to announcing the teams as they are decided.
Training
Boys are expected to be at training for any teams that they have been selected in. If you cannot make training, your coach must be notified by either a note from home, an email or even a chat as you see them around the school. This should be done as soon as you know you cannot make the session.
