Book Week Activities

Junior School Book Week (theme: Find your Treasure) kicking off today with 'Treasure Hunt' a musical based on the Children's Book Council Awards Shortlisted books for this year.

On Tuesday 21 August, author Tim Harris visits our school for the first half of the day with sessions with each of the Stage groups and a book signing at lunch.

On Wednesday 22 August we'll have a pop up Library in the playground before school with readings of the shortlisted books.

On Thursday 23 August we have our biggest day - starting at around 8:45am, our Book Character Parade begins. Following this, classes will rotate to a couple of different teachers to be read a 'treasured' story until lunchtime at 11am.  All of the teachers are dressing up as pirates with the Kindy teachers coming as Dr Seuss themed characters.

Home Reading

Some tips for home reading:

  • Establish a home reading routine. Read aloud with your children every day. Ten minutes for each child around a book of his/her choice. If English is your second language, read in your home language. If you lack confidence in reading aloud, the fact that you are reading with your child is what matters. Talk about the illustrations and contribute where you can. Share your excitement for reading and this will be the model your child will adopt.
  • The reader holds the book! There is a lot of power and control in the world of reading. The reader needs to have the power.
  • During home reading time, turn off electronic devices and give each child ten minutes of your undivided attention.
  • Before you read a book, set your child up for success. Reading is not a test! Reading time is only ten minutes so do some of the following: Keep the introduction short – one minute is enough. Talk about the illustrations and the title. Read the blurb and talk about the author, talk about any unusual words, read a page here and there as your child flicks through the book, discuss the characters. This is a short introduction, not an interrogation. If the book is already a familiar one, then this step is unnecessary.

Junior School Nature Club

The students from the Nature Club were blessed with a gorgeous sunny day when the mound of soil arrived at the Junior School.

They worked well together with the guidance of our resident Gardening Gurus, Luke and Nathan, to prepare the planters boxes. The students weren’t afraid to get their hands dirty as they shovelled the dirt into the wheelbarrows and tipped the soil in carefully, all with the assistance of the more senior members of the club.

Nature Club looks forward to planting a range of shrubs and vegetables at next week’s session. We were very impressed with the enthusiasm, teamwork and hard work displayed by the Nature Club team.

Mass Expectations

Our Positive Behaviour Focus for the last fortnight has been on displaying respect and reverence at Mass.

Our students have all come from different schools, cultures and religious practices. However, we are now all part of the St Gregory's Marist Community and have been modelling the actions and responses that we are expected to follow and respect when we attend Masses at the College.

Students have focused on such actions as genuflecting, blessing themselves with Holy Water upon entry and exit from the Church, responding after prayers and listening reverently to God's word.

It is a great opportunity for families to discuss these practices and expectations. Parents are most welcome to come and join any of the College Mass celebrations.
