Community Service - Year 10

In a new initiative for sport, Year 10 students were able to go to the Primary School and help out on a Thursday. Many boys jumped at the opportunity and it has been a great experience for everyone involved.

The boys were split up into pairs and sent to classes from Kindergarten all the way to Year 6. There they helped out with a variety of activities. These included helping kids with Art, Math, Reading and Religion.

The highlight of the days are going out to lunch with the kids and having fun playing a variety of games including, tip, cops and robbers, soccer and Farmer Sam. Helping out has connected us more with the Primary School Kids and has been extremely fun.

Thank you to Mrs Farias for organising this activity and taking us down to the Primary school. I have certainly learnt a lot from this experience and made some new friends. I would encourage any student to participate as it is truly a lot of fun.

Public Speaking News: Quota Student of the Year Quest

David De Vecchis and James Hilton participated in the Quota Student of the Year Quest on Tuesday 14 August. Six students participated in total.

James Hilton was the runner up and David De Vecchis was the winner. David will go on to represent the College and the Campbelltown Quota Club the Regional Final on the 8 September at Goulburn. James and David spoke very eloquently presenting very poignant and powerful speeches.

All the participants had to complete a 30 minute interview based on their experiences, school life and general knowledge, followed by the speech night. Here the participants presented a 4 minute prepared speech and a one minute impromptu speech.

The other participating schools were St Patricks College Campbelltown, Broughton Anglican College and Campbelltown Performing Arts High School.

Band - Winter Serenade

Our annual Winter Serenade was held Tuesday 14 August. It was a lovely evening that showcased the individual talents of our boys.

Our newly formed brass and saxophone ensembles gave their premier performance and we look forward to hearing from them in the future.

Our boys have great talents that sometimes go unseen and this evening is a chance for them to shine.

Well done boys on your performances! I would like to thank Alan Steedman and Murray Bishop, two of our tutors, for attending and Mr Malone and Mr Malaesilia for their help in preparing the evening.

External Music Success!

Congratulations Sam Gould! Many of our boys undertake private instrumental lessons at the college. At the College we offer tuition in guitar, bass, drums, piano, trombone, trumpet, saxophone, clarinet, voice. Some boys have external lessons and use their own time to have lessons and practice. One of our boys has achieved Grade 6 Singing with distinction through the RockSchool program. Congratulations to Sam Gould (Year 11). Italian Day 2018 - Year 8

On Monday 13 August, Year 8 had the opportunity to experience a day of Italian culture, both at school and through an excursion to Bankstown Sports Club’s “La Piazza,” a small Italian themed section of the club.

In the first two periods of the day, while we were at school, we experienced four activities related to Italian culture. The first was a lesson in making pizza dough, with Mr Vetrano, who used his extensive pre-teaching Italian restaurant experience to create, in a small amount of time, some pizza dough. We all broke into groups of three and got to feel the texture of a small amount of premade dough.

After Mr Vetrano’s masterclass, we went down to the side of the hall, where Mr Perna had some cones set up for us to have a soccer relay, with a prize for the winners at stake. Mrs Santos’ presentation was next, informing us of several well known and lesser known Italian dishes as well as the importance of a meal in Italy.

For my group’s final rotation, Miss Khoury taught us about the Carnival of Venice, known for its elaborate masks. We then tried to make our own masks, before the end of our in school activities for the day.

We had recess, and then the grade met on the basketball courts before getting on the bus for our journey to Bankstown Sports Club. When we walked in, it looked like any other club foyer, but we went up a few stairs and went into a round, tall room with a path around going up, with a nature theme to it, and a giant tree up through the middle, with branches over the path. As we went around, we saw a grand brick entrance, with the words La Piazza on top. Inside was an authentic Italian atmosphere, with a glass roof so it almost felt like we were outside, and buildings on either side so it was like we were on an Italian street, clothes lines and all. The food was authentic (no pineapple on pizza) and tasted great, and we had some beautiful gelato at the end.

Then we went back on the buses, everyone with a full stomach, and went back to school for the day’s end. Thanks to the organising teachers for a great day!

Courtroom Scenario - Year 10

This week our class has been going through the many themes of the play, Macbeth, with a specific focus on blame. As an engaging task to further extend our knowledge we have acted out a court hearing.

Students have been given arguments to debate about who or what was to blame for Macbeth’s murderous actions. Each group has a different focus considering whether the witches, Lady Macbeth, fate or ambition are to blame for the ways in which Macbeth acts.

We have had a lot of fun pretending to be lawyers and preparing our cases.
